We all hear about mythology in our lifetime; whether it is true or false, no one really knows or cares. But it is the essence of the character that we become infatuated by. So in order to commemorate the end to Women's month, here is a list of a couple of badass women who rocked the ancient/mythological world.
1. Mulan
"Mulan" is a real story guys. It was first written by Wu Xe and has had about five different variations throughout Chinese theater. There is a 1939 movie made from China using Beijing/Jinju opera. It's a treat.
2. Mamacocha
Wife of Viracocha and goddess of the rain and the wind. She is the oldest known deity in Peru. Fishermen are her chief worshippers. She is also the mother of Inti, the sun god, who was so influential in Peru, it was the name of their currency, until the Fujimori era ā which then turned into the sol, which still is the equivalent to the word "sun," so still pretty badass.
3. Yennenga
Yennenga is considered by the Mossi to be the mother of their empire, and many statues of her can be found in the capital city of Burkina Faso, Ouagadougou. A statue of a golden stallion, called the Ćtalon de Yennenga, is awarded as the first prize in the biennial. The national football team is nicknamed "Les Ćtalons" ("the Stallions") in reference to her stallion.
4. Morgan Le Fay
Ah Morgan Le Fay. Many have written this English woman as either a saint or sinner. She was indeed a witch in the loosest of terms, and was great friends with King Arthur, until she decided that he wasn't good enough (for whatever unclear reasons), and in some stories, ends up killing him in some sort of fashion. She has always though kept her image as healer first.
5. Antigone
Antigone has had a lot on her plate, having her dad really be her brother and her mother committing suicide while she had to take care of his blind self. This well-known Greek tragedy is a perfect example of Greek filial piety. Not only does Antigone trying to mourn her own brother, but she defies a king (King Creon) to do so. Ultimate female familial badass.
6. Hel
Not much is said of Hel except that she is the Norse goddess of the underworld, a pretty badass title. It is also believed in some stories that she is the daughter or wife of Loki.
7. Macha
Macha (pronounced maxe) was one of the first people to settle in Ireland. She is recognized for her rule over the land and making the beginnings of Ireland.
8. Tomoe Gozen
Tomoe is the OG japanese warrior. Not only did she fight with Minamoto no Yoshinaka in the Genpei War, but was also his lover, at that! She won battles that many would claim would have been impossible to win without her. She is forever remembered for her bravery and noted as one of the very few female samurais.
9. Anahita
She is the Persian goddess of virginity, water and war. This badass' temples often were filled with sex, and she became one of the main women who wanted to find great strength within themselves.
10. Shakuntala
Shakuntala is an old sanskrit character who waits for her lover Dushyanta to return though without a couple of hiccups along the way. She is an example of the ideal woman in the old Indian culture: Noble, fair, kind, beautiful and faithful.
11. Kokyangwuti (Spiderwoman)
This Hopi legend begins with Kokyangwuti is born into the world, not even knowing who she is or why she was born. Her creator, Sotuknag, asks her to create life in a world that has none. Therefore, she creates twins, Palongwhoya and Poquangwhoya, who went to the opposite ends to the world and made the earth steadily turn. She then majestically created trees, animals, rivers and such. This is a true badass.
12. Queen PÅmare IV
She was the fourth monarch of the Tahitian royalty. as her full name suggests, Ź»Aimata PÅmare IV Vahine-o-PunuateraŹ»itua (otherwise known as Ź»Aimata ā "eye-eater," which means she would the eat the eyes of her defeated enemy. Damn. that is an OG badass.
