11 Things You Must Do Over Winter Break

Winter break is arguably the most highly anticipated time of the school year for any college student. As a current college student, there is no other break that compares to this one...it doesn't get any better than having an entire month off from school. After finals, winter break is 100% necessary.

With finals steadily approaching, stress is at an all time high. There's not much time to do anything else because everyone is focused on studying for exams and finishing the semester with good grades. Putting in the hard work for the next two weeks will soon be worth it. Other than getting an A on final exams, there is no better reward than a month free of any school work. Once all the stress is finally relieved, the main focus of every student will be on deciding as to what they will be doing over break. Being home for this long can get somewhat boring, so it's definitely important to stay busy. If you run out of things to do this break, consider these ideas...

1. Go see the tree. If you live close enough to the city, going to see the Christmas tree at Rockefeller Center is a perfect day trip. It's also a great way to meet up with some of your friends from school, especially for those who live in New York or New Jersey.

2. Go skiing. It is inevitable that the weather is going to get cold, so you might as well make the most of it. Skiing, tubing or even sledding are all great activities for the winter weather and are enjoyable to do with friends or family.

3. Work out. Going to the gym and getting some exercise might not be the first thing you want to do over winter break, but it's never too early to start working on your beach bod. There is no doubting that it is tough to work out while at school. All the school work and studying takes up a good amount of time, so while you're home you might as well take advantage of it.

4. See a movie. There are always some good movies out around Christmas time. Going to the movies with some friends is a perfect way to pass time and to spend some quality time with friends from home, or even family.

5. Go shopping. Whether you're a guy or girl, everyone needs some new clothes for when they get back to school for spring semester. Although the weather starts to get colder and winter clothing is essential, it is necessary to start getting together clothing for the warmer weather as well.

6. Catch up with the family. It may not be the first thing you want to do, but spending some quality time with your family can be fun, and it is definitely important. Going out to dinner or even spending the night in to watch a movie with your parents is always something to do. I'm sure any college student can say that after being away from their family for long periods of time, they look forward to spending time with their loved ones.

7. Try making some extra cash. There's a pretty good chance it will snow over winter break, so going around the block and offering to shovel a neighbor's driveway can be a great way to make some extra cash. This was something that I had always done as a kid and personally, it is not a bad idea because after fall semester almost every college student is broke and in need of some money to get them through the spring semester.

8. Catch up on Netflix. With a lot of spare time, this is a perfect opportunity to catch up on your favorite TV shows or even watch a movie. With such a busy schedule away at college it's hard to find time to just sit back, relax and watch some Netflix.

9. Play in the snow. No matter your age, you're never to old to go out and play in the snow. Doing things like building a snow man, making a snow angel and even gathering up all your friends and having a snowball fight are some of the best things to do in the winter.

10. Baking cookies. Something fun to do during the holidays is to bake some cookies. Baking cookies isn't only a fun activity but it's something quick to do and helps get you into the holiday spirit.

11. Catch up on some sleep. Getting sleep while you're home is probably the best thing to happen to a college student. There is no better feeling than climbing into your own bed. With the luxury of being in your own bed and having no school work to do, it's the best time to catch up on sleep.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
