First, let’s take second to point out it’s West Virginia, not Western Virginia because there really is a huge difference. Not only did I grow up in West Virginia, I met some of my favorite people there, I laughed there, I cried there, and I made some the best memories of my life in my little WV town. I’ll forever be grateful to West By God for creating these people and putting them in my life.
1. The scenery is breathtaking.
There's a reason we refer to it as 'almost heaven, West Virginia'. I've moved around quite a bit and traveled to many different places. The mountains of WV are definitely one of the most amazing sights you'll ever see. If you haven't been, you need to add it to your bucket list because you're really missing out.
2. The people are kind.
While you have those bad apples here and there, as with any town, most people are so down to Earth. Their country roots are strong, they're old fashioned, and they're always down to help their neighbors. I'm sure you read all about how Brad Paisley and Jennifer Garner helped out during the floods this year. When you come from a place like WV, you never forget.
3. The church experience is not what you're used to.
Country church is the best church! I've been to many churches and haven't experienced anything this. They play banjos and preach with their accents. The community is small but that means everyone knows each other. It's so comfortable and welcoming.
4. The accents can be undecipherable.
This is hilarious, especially in older people. They know how you're actually supposed to say Appalachian and say things like:
- Y'all
- I done did it
- I'm fixin' to get mad
- yee yee
The list could go on forever, it's like a whole new language for city folk.
5. The Hinton DQ is the best DQ.
I had to, it's the best Dairy Queen you'll ever have. I don't think anyone is even sure why - it's just amazing. Plus, it has a great view.
6. You haven't seen fall until you've witnessed it here.
Guys, the mountains, the leaves, the fog, the water - everything comes together so perfectly to create something incredible.
7. Country Roads will give you all the feels.
"Country roads, take me home to the place I belong.
West Virginia, mountain mamma, take me home, country roads.
All my memories gather round her, miner's lady, stranger to blue water.
Dark and dusty, painted on the sky, misty taste of moonshine, teardrop in my eye."
Preach it, John Denver!
8. There's actually a lot to do.
When I lived there, I complained that there was never anything to do in my small town. After moving away, I saw how wrong I was. It does depend on the season, but there's so many activities. There's hunting, mudding, hiking, fishing, swimming, sledding, I could go on all day. Of course, there's still the typical places to go shopping, bowling, skating, or movies if you're more of an indoors person (lame).
9. West Virginia makes the best people.
I guess I owe you one, WV. You helped shape my best friends into who they are today and I wouldn't have them any other way.
10. There are so many photo opportunities.
It's a good thing that when I visit I don't drive there. I'd have to stop every 2 minutes because there's something Instagram worthy around every corner.
11. It will always be home.
I saved the best for last. No matter where I go or what I do, WV will always be my home.
