With the fall semester quickly approaching, it is time to get prepared for the upcoming school year. Every year I tend to find new websites or apps for my phone that I wish I had known about sooner. There are so many tools out there to help with studying, saving money, and finding the right classes. Whether you are an incoming freshmen, or this is your last year of school, here are a few helpful websites and apps that every college student should know about:
1. Rate My Professors
I'm so thankful someone told me about this website before I started signing up for college classes. One of the beauties, and headaches, of college is that you get to choose what time you take your classes and who you take them with. It can be hard to decide, but this website makes it 100 times easier. You get to hear from other students that took the course, and can decide which professor is right for you.
2. Quizlet
I wish I had found out about this website sooner. Not only can you make your own online flashcards, but you can also find flashcards from other people that have taken the same course. Two heads are better than one. Don't want other people to be able to see or use your flashcards? No worries, you can password protect them.
3. Pocket Points
This is an app, and it rewards you for staying off your phone during class. It uses your GPS, so it knows when you're on campus. You're able to redeem your points for free or discounted food or products at local businesses.
4. Uber
Yes, I know more than just college students use this app, but every college student needs to take full advantage of it. With apps like this, there is no excuse to be drinking and driving. Uber rides are fairly cheap and the cost can be split among you and a few friends. If you don't already have the app, download it now. Your first ride is even free.
5. Keep Me Out
Do you get too distracted by Facebook or other websites while studying? This website will help! Just enter in the website you need to stay off of and how long you need to stay off of it and it'll help you stay off of it for that length of time.
6. Prezi
If you want the best presentations for class, try Prezi! It's similar to PowerPoint, but since it is online you can work on it and present from anywhere. If you're working on a group project, you can share it in the Prezi cloud so that everyone in your group can help collaborate on the project.
7. Easy Bib
This website is a life saver for citing sources for papers. There's different ways to cite sources for different types of papers, and sometimes it's hard to remember exactly how for each type of source. Just enter in what you know about your sources, and it cites your sources for you.
8. Google Scholar
When trying to find credible sources for papers or projects, Google Scholar is your best friend. It works just like Google, but it only pulls up credible sources.
9. Big Words
As college students, we all know that textbooks are expensive. We are constantly trying to find the cheapest textbooks. Big Words lets you search for the books you need, and tells you where the cheapest place is to buy or rent your textbooks.
10. Written Kitten
Who said writing papers had to be boring? Written Kitten lets you choose a word count, and each time you write that many words, it shows you a new picture of a kitten! You can even change it to show a picture of a puppy or bunny.
11. Your School's Website
One of the best resources for students is your own school's website. If you're not already familiar with what your school website has to offer, get familiar with it! Most school websites have academic calendars, financial aid resources, student job listings, degree plans, and other useful things!
