While college is definitely a worthwhile investment, we all know it isn't cheap. Other than the thousands of dollars spent on tuition, dorms, and meal plans, college students face numerous other expenses. Some of these, like textbooks or school supplies, cannot be avoided. However, students may be wasting money without even realizing it. Thanks to the internet, buying things has become much easier, allowing customers to ship things to themselves without even having to leave campus. College students can also spend money at the campus bookstore, sending out for food delivery, or even buying things for their dorm that they think they need. Nevertheless, college students are spending much more money than necessary, and "if you think education is expensive, try ignorance."
1. Textbooks
Though textbooks are important, there are ways to save money. Wait until you go to the class and get the syllabus before getting the textbook. You may find that professors tell you on the first day you won't even need the book. If you do need it, always try to rent it or buy it used.
2. Food
Dinning hall food may be less than edible, but that doesn't mean you should be ordering out or eating out every night. You're already paying a lot for the meal plan so you may as well use it.
3. Impulse Buys
Coming from someone who bought a $40 trampoline the first week of college, you really don't need it. Unless it is an absolute necessity, you will probably only use it for a week and be sick of it.
4. Dorm Supplies
Especially before freshman year, you will buy a lot of things you think you need but actually don't. Coffee mugs are cool, but you won't need more than one at a time.
5. Going Out
Instead of going out and spending money most nights of the week, try attending some free on-campus events. After all, those events are being paid for with your money in the first place.
6. Caffeine
Everyone needs something to wake up in the morning, but a caffeine addiction can be expensive. Instead of always going to pricey Starbucks, make your own coffee.
7. Campus Bookstore
$40 is a bit much just for a t-shirt with your school's name on it. If you already have five, you probably don't need another.
8. Spring Break
College students somehow manage to break the stereotype of being poor during spring break. If you do go away, keep in mind that you'll be returning to campus soon with only the money you have left.
9. Gym Clothes
You buy them thinking it will motivate you to go to gym on campus, but will it really?
10. Laptops
Although laptops are important, make sure to research your laptop before buying it. If it won't last you the four years or is way more expensive than a laptop needs to be, don't buy it.
11. Water Bottles
Instead of buying a case of water every week, get one water bottle with a filter that you can fill at a water fountain.
