Sweet home, Virginia. Virginia is awesome. We have beaches, mountains, lakes, fields, rivers, and booming metropolitan areas! There is something for everyone in Virginia. There is so much history in Virginia that much of the country learns, but there are some things about Virginia that you have to live here to know! Here are 11 things that you know to be true if you are from Virginia.
1. Schools close for two inches of snow.
If you are originally from the north, you probably think we're crazy, but it doesn't snow often enough here for us to pour a bunch of money into snow removal!
2. You avoid I-95 at all costs.
Unless you really enjoy sitting in traffic, I-95 is not a place that you probably want to be. No matter what time you're traveling, 95 will be backed up somewhere.
3. You've been to Jamestown, Monticello, Mount Vernon, Historical Williamsburg, or any combination of these at least once.
Virginia has a rich history. Home of the first, permanent English settlement and the birthplace of presidents. There are plenty of opportunities for school field trips.
4. If it is too cold outside, schools might have a delay.
School boards don't want little kids waiting outside in single digit weather, especially when our winter gear probably doesn't provide enough warmth for that kind of weather.
5. You say "y'all."
If you happen to venture north and say the word "y'all," they will definitely know you're from the south; it's a dead giveaway. It's just so much better to say than "you guys."
6. If you're from central or southern Virginia, you want nothing to do with NoVa.
NoVa has a completely different way of life than the rest of Virginia. Chances are, if you didn't grow up there, you don't want to end up living there later in life.
7. West Virginia jokes will never get old.
There is a huge difference between the two states and you get very offended if people think that you're from West Virginia.
8. RVA is home to hipsters.
You know that Richmond was once the capital of the Confederacy and there is a lot of history there, but now it is home to a bunch of tattooed hipsters with big beards.
9. You gained a lot more respect for VCU once they made it to the Final Four.
People definitely jumped on the bandwagon when VCU made it to the Final Four. Since then, application numbers have really gone up!
10. You know the correct pronunciation for Norfolk and Suffolk.
It's not Nor-FOLK and Suf-FOLK. It's very easy to spot an "out-of-towner" if they pronounce it this way.
11. You know when you've crossed into Virginia from North Carolina because the roads suddenly get horrible.
Not sure why, but our roads are not in the best shape!
