11 Ways Summer Can Be Hard On College Students

Summer break is supposed to be a fun time for any student. The weather gets nicer, the days get longer and you don't have to worry about assignments or exams. You get to go back home and see family and old friends. All of this is great, and definitely enjoyable. Nonetheless, summer can be a trying time for some college students. As a college student, you might find yourself having to re-adjust greatly to life back at home. This can leave you bored, anxious and confused as to what you should do with yourself. So, while summer can be fun, it can also be annoying. Here are 11 things you might end up dealing with while you are home for the summer.

1. You miss your friends at college.

Leaving college for the summer also means leaving all of the friends you have made there. The friends you make in college are like your family, and it is hard to imagine an entire 2-3 months without them. What is even worse is if you and your friends are all in different states, and you can't even meet up over the summer. But, while you and your friends from college are separated for the moment, you can still hang out with your friends back home, whom you have probably missed dearly while being away at college.

2. Summer vacation just prolongs the process of getting your degree.

Summer gives college students a break from all of the hard work and pressure in school. While that is great and all, it can suck once you realize that all of that extra free time is keeping you from getting your degree faster. That can be slightly annoying to anyone who has plans on getting several degrees. But, patience is a virtue after all, and we all deserve a break.

3. Summer classes are too expensive to take anyways...

You might have entertained the thought of taking a few summer courses in order to get your degree faster. But, in most cases, summer classes are too expensive to take, and there are hardly ever a good amount of classes to choose from, anyways. Not to mention, the fact that most summer courses only last a few weeks. Which means going to a class room for several hours each day over a few weeks. The amount of work in all that time must be insane!

4. You might get left with nothing to do.

Without all of the school work, tests, and clubs to keep you busy, you might find yourself with hardly anything to do. As a college student, you get used to being busy and running around doing everything you can to be as successful as possible. So, when you go back home, you might find yourself in a rut, and really desperate to find something fun or interesting to do.

5. Or you get stuck doing a boring job.

If you don't spend your entire summer trying to find something to do, you are probably going to get a summer job. Summer jobs are hardly fun, and you rarely ever find something that relates to what you are majoring in. So, you get stuck working at minimum wage jobs in the summer heat. Even here, you can find yourself bored. But hey, at least you get paid.

6. You miss the intellectual settings of college.

When you find yourself stuck at home or work during the summer, you might also find yourself missing the classroom. You might miss having deep, intellectual conversations in class, or being challenged mentally with interesting assignments and projects. Back home, you wonder how you can keep yourself thinking and not falling into a zombie-like state. It can be hard to keep yourself intellectually occupied outside of school. But, you can find ways to keep your mind occupied out of the classroom. You can always read a good book, start a fun project, or take up a new hobby to keep your mind busy.

7. You feel less independent going back home.

When you go back home to be with your family, you will experience a serious lack of independence. When you are in school, you get to decide when you wake up, who you hang out with, and how to spend you time. But at home, you may have to give up a few of these privileges in order to help around the house, or maintain a summer job.

8. You might be going back to a small town.

Going back home might mean going back to a small town. Being in a small town can really limit the things you can do, and it can even make you feel trapped. But, you might find happiness in the little things in your hometown. Like your bed.

9. People might start asking you about what you want to do with your degree.

You also might end up getting asked several times about what you want to do with your degree. The question can be annoying after a while if you are not entirely sure what you want to do in your field. You might even find yourself wanting to do a million things with your degree. But, no matter what, it is okay not to have a direct answer to the "What do you want to do after college?" question. Sometimes it takes a while before you are 100 percent sure as to what you want to do. Or, you just might stay open to anything that is in your field. Which is okay, too.

10. Your sleep schedule gets messed up.

Without having an early class to get up for you might end up sleeping in late, or staying up all night long. This can really suck because it can make you feel groggy, lifeless, and maybe even depressed. It's even worse if you end up having to get up earlier than usual for a summer job...

11. You just don't know what to do with yourself...

Sometimes you get so used to college that it almost feels like home. In school, you planned everything in your life around your education. Now, you are back home, and everything feels different. You may not know what to do with yourself. But, everything will be fine. You just have to find ways to keep yourself busy. Sometimes you do so by getting a summer job, hanging out with old friends, or just reading a book to keep you brain thinking. Whatever it is, make sure it is something worthwhile. But never forget to have fun!

To My Loving Boyfriend,

  • Thank you for all that you do for me
  • Thank you for working through disagreements with me
  • Thank you for always supporting me
  • I appreciate you more than words can express
  • You have helped me grow and become a better person
  • I can't wait to see where life takes us next
  • I promise to cherish every moment with you
  • Thank you for being my best friend and confidante
  • I love you and everything you do

To start off, here's something I don't say nearly enough: thank you. Thank you, thank you, thank you from the bottom of my heart. You do so much for me that I can't even put into words how much I appreciate everything you do - and have done - for me over the course of our relationship so far. While every couple has their fair share of tiffs and disagreements, thank you for getting through all of them with me and making us a better couple at the other end. With any argument, we don't just throw in the towel and say we're done, but we work towards a solution that puts us in a greater place each day. Thank you for always working with me and never giving up on us.

Ah, yes, good old Hauppauge. We are that town in the dead center of Long Island that barely anyone knows how to pronounce unless they're from the town itself or live in a nearby area. Hauppauge is home to people of all kinds. We always have new families joining the community but honestly, the majority of the town is filled with people who never leave (high school alumni) and elders who have raised their kids here. Around the town, there are some just some landmarks and places that only the people of Hauppauge will ever understand the importance or even the annoyance of.
