With finals week in full swing, it's easy to put all our efforts into our school work without much thought of our physical and mental health. Overworking yourself is not healthy, and there are many ways to reduce stress and to take a relaxing break from what can seem like a never-ending couple of weeks. It is important to take time for yourself amidst all of the chaos. Here are 11 ways you can reduce stress during finals week (and the weeks leading up to it).

1. Take a scenic walk

As simple as this sounds, taking a walk is such an effective way in clearing the mind and releasing energy from the body. Take some time to get moving, no matter how busy your day is.

2. Stay away from junk food

Processed foods and sugar can make you feel unfocused and groggy. Fruits and vegetables will not only make you feel good but also provide you with energy minus the crash.

3. Practice yoga and meditation

Yoga and meditation are both great ways to clear your mind and reduce your stress levels. Take the time to do a 30-minute yoga video along with a short guided meditation.

4. Take a hot shower or bath

Taking a hot shower or bath can remotivate and rejuvenate you. It is a simple way to take the time to be alone and get away from studying.

5. Read a book

Get yourself away from the computer screen by picking up your favorite leisure book.

6. Color in a coloring book

This is an amazing way to de-stress and unwind. Adult coloring books are so detailed that they can be very helpful in taking your mind off of school work for a bit.

7. Hit the gym

The gym is a great way to release built up tension and energy that is stored from sitting at your computer. Take the time to get at least 30-minutes in at the gym to help you stay motivated.

8. Play a game

Whether it be a video game, a board game, or just an app on your phone, having fun is a necessity during finals in order to stay stable.

9. Listen to upbeat music

Put on your headphones and put on some music that puts you in a great mood and put away your school work for a little while.

10. Get a good nights sleep

Sleep can work wonders. No sleep will make you less able to retain information, more prone to stress and anxiety, as well as unhealthy food cravings. Skip the all nighter and get sleep.

11. Spend time with friends

Don't forget to hang out with friends a little bit here and there! Your friends are most likely feeling the same dread you are with finals. Grab some coffee or lunch and talk about anything but school.

Though it is very important to excel in your classes, it is also important to take care of yourself. The amount of pressure we have on ourselves to succeed can be daunting and overwhelming, but there are ways to take a step back and take care of yourself in the midst of all the craziness.

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.
