11 Unavoidable Questions Your Family Asks You

We've all been there. You go home for the holidays and you're bombarded with the same questions from your family and extended family. Sometimes you just want to hand out an FAQ to them so you can avoid all of the awkward questions they've asked a million times before.

1. How's school going?

This is just a loaded question...school is a giant roller coaster. Some weeks are good and chill but then the next week you have 4 exams, 3 projects, and daily homework due. Between the multiple mental breakdowns and stress eating, classes can actually be fun.

2. What's your major?

If I had a quarter for every time someone asked me this, I would have next semester paid for. It seems like no one can remember what I'm going to school for no matter how many times I've told them or my parents have told them. I should just wear a sticker saying my major.

3. Do you have to go to graduate school?

Oh boy. Don't get me started. It feels just like yesterday I was applying for undergrad. I don't even want to think about graduate school, which yes, I will have to go to. I don't want to repeat the whole application process plus take the GRE. I'm just trying to get through this semester.

4. If so, where are you thinking of going?

Anywhere they'll take me to be honest!

5. Do you have a boyfriend/girlfriend?

Avoid this question at all costs! No matter what your answer is, they'll give you a speech about how great a person you are or that they'll play 20 questions about them.

6. Are your classes difficult?

Depends on the day. Some days, classes are a breeze and some times I want to avoid my classes like the plague. As I get further into my undergrad, my classes are more challenging but yet rewarding because I know I'll use this information in my future career.

7. Do you like your roommate(s)?

Yes I like my roommates. It's fun living with my friends but yet sometimes stressful. I've known my friends since freshman year of college so it's nice not living with a bunch of strangers. And to answer your questions family...no we don't eat each other's food, no we don't share clothes, no we aren't afraid of others stealing our stuff, and yes we hang out together.

8. Are you getting all A's?

To be honest, I don't know. This isn't high school where they updated your grades every day. Sometimes it takes one week for a grade and sometimes it takes a month for a grade. Also, some classes I don't have daily work and it's just exams and projects...so who knows how I'm doing in my classes!

9. Are you eating enough?

Compared to living at home? Not a chance. First of all, I have to buy my own food. I didn't realize how much stuff you need to making meals and how expensive it is! Secondly, I don't have the motivation to cook food when I get home from classes/work so cereal it is!

10. Do you have a job?

Yes, family I do. I need to pay rent and for food somehow. My savings from summer have quickly vanished because of rent, utilities, gas, and food. I didn't realize how much it cost being an adult.

Family. Can't live with them, can't live without them...but you can live without their interrogations every holiday.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.
