11 Traditional and Nontraditional Things To Thank My Mom For

Most parents like to avoid the fact that you're in college and that you're going to do things that they don't approve of. However, my mom acknowledges that I am by no means a poster child for good decisions. This doesn't mean my mom is encouraging me to go out on Thursday nights, it just means that she's accepted that I'm a stereotypical college student. To help break some of the habits of a stereotypical college student, my mom has given me some solid advice that tends to make me look less "basic white girl" and feel a little better on a Saturday morning. However, nontraditional advice isn't the only advice that my mom has given me. After all, she is my parent, not an older sister. Some of the things that I'd like to thank my mom for make me question if they fall under traditional or nontraditional. Either way, here's a list of things that I want to thank my mom for.

1. Thank you for teaching me not to say "I love this song" at a party/bar.

Everyone knows that you've had a few too many fruity drinks when you start saying, "I love this song" to every song. I would consider this to be nontraditional advice that every parent needs to give to their child.

2. Thank you for forcing me to listen to '80s hair bands.

I'm not sure if this is something that every parent does to their child, but I'm brainwashed to the point where I'm convinced that I like this genre of music.

3. Thank you for teaching me that no matter how bad your feet hurt, you shouldn't take your shoes off.

It doesn't matter if you're walking two miles, keep your shoes on. The sidewalk is gross and beauty is pain.

4. Thank you for drilling "please" and "thank you" into my brain.

It's actually amazing how many people don't use basic manners.

5. Thank you for recommending Ibuprofen before my first drink and after my last.

This actually does help with the morning after a fun night headache, but I'm pretty sure that a medical professional would disapprove of this.

6. Thank you for telling me to wear a watch to job interviews.

Apparently, wearing a watch hints to employers that you're punctual, which I would have never known without my mom telling me.

7. Thank you for reminding me not to take drinks from strangers.

This is probably one of the more important things to thank my mom for. Remember, you never know what is in the drink someone is handing you.

8. Thank you for buying me groceries.

It's always nice to have a full fridge after mom leaves from a visit.

9. Thank you for cleaning my apartment.

It's actually really odd that my mom cares more about the cleanliness of my apartment than I do, but I'm so glad that she's brave enough to clean it.

10. Thank you for listening to me complain about school.

Even though there's nothing that you can do about how stressful school can be, you still listen.

11. Thank you for introducing me to Biggby coffee.

This is the greatest coffee that I have ever tasted.

In honor of Mother’s Day, I have been thinking of all the things my mom does for my family and me. Although I couldn’t write nearly all of them, here are a few things that moms do for us.

They find that shirt that’s right in front of you, but just you can’t seem to find.

1. Thank you for being the one I can always count on to be honest.

A true friend will tell you if the shirt is ugly, or at least ask to borrow it and "accidentally" burn it.

2. Thank you for accepting me for who I am.

A best friend will love you regardless of the stale french fries you left on the floor of your car, or when you had lice in 8th grade and no one wanted to talk to you.

Do as I say, not as I do.

Your eyes widen in horror as you stare at your phone. Beads of sweat begin to saturate your palm as your fingers tremble in fear. The illuminated screen reads, "Missed Call: Mom."

Growing up with strict parents, you learn that a few things go unsaid. Manners are everything. Never talk back. Do as you're told without question. Most importantly, you develop a system and catch on to these quirks that strict parents have so that you can play their game and do what you want.

"Friends" maybe didn’t have everything right or realistic all the time, but they did have enough episodes to create countless reaction GIFs and enough awesomeness to create, well, the legacy they did. Something else that is timeless, a little rough, but memorable? Living away from the comforts of home. Whether you have an apartment, a dorm, your first house, or some sort of residence that is not the house you grew up in, I’m sure you can relate to most of these!
