11 Tips To Prevent Violence Against Women

In the wake of the Stanford Rapists's Sentencing, and the news of a Colorado teen who killed his girlfriend for breaking up with him

. I've compiled a list of ways to prevent violence against women.

  1. Respect women (Seems like a no brainer, huh.)
  2. If you see a woman walking, don’t attack her
    1. Let her go on her way to wherever she is going. Better yet, offer to walk her home and expect nothing in return except for the knowledge that you did something good.
  3. If you see a woman too drunk to say yes, don’t rape her
    1. If you want to be a good human being, help her. Reunite her with her friends, walk her home, call 911. It is not that hard.
  4. If a woman says no, accept it
    1. Women are not obligated to be interested in you. End of story.
  5. If a woman says she just wants to be friends, accept that.
    1. Women are not machines that you put friendship tokens into and a relationship pops out. If she treats you as a friend, treat her as a friend and don’t pretend like she owes you anything.
  6. If a woman doesn’t want you to touch her, don’t touch her.
    1. “Stop! Don’t touch me there! This is my no-no square!” It’s a rhyme that little girls sing, but its pretty true.
  7. If a woman seems uncomfortable, leave her alone.
    1. If you can’t tell if she’s uncomfortable, ask her outright, or leave her alone. Simple.
  8. If a woman breaks up with you, don’t attack her.
    1. Some relationships don’t work out. No need for violence. Just write in your diary about how much you don’t like her, then build a bridge and get over it.
  9. If a woman asks you to leave her alone, leave her alone.
    1. So at this point, you know you make her uncomfortable. Leave her alone or risk the law intervening.
  10. If a woman wears a revealing outfit, appreciate, don’t hate
    1. If you can’t control yourself around a woman just because her shoulders are bare, then lock yourself in a room until you can play nice.
  11. Don’t be a meninist
    1. This is unlined in my Word document because its not a real thing, defined in urban dictionary instead of Webster’s. “Meninism” is literally a movement against women, which preaches hate and ignorance. If you or someone you know identifies as a meninist, take them to the nearest psychologist so their can get over their sexism and mommy issues.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
