11 Tips for When You're Sick at College
Body Project Fitness

Getting sick is something that happens, it's just a part of life. We've all been sick at some point, but usually it's in the comfort of your own home with those you love around. If you haven't been sick at college you probably will be at some point (sorry but it's true, unless you have an immune system of steel). These aren't necessarily going to heal you, sometimes your body just need time but hopefully these tips will help you cope and you will feel better in no time.

1. Don't Panic.

I know it's the easiest thing to freak out and worry about what you need to take, homework, or how much you want to be home, but just take a deep breath you will get through this.

2. Call Home.

Calling home can be a little bit of a comfort as well as informing them that you're sick in the first place. Your parents might have some advice on what to do or take too.

3. Go to the Nurse.

If your college campus has a nurse's office go there. Granted if you just have a runny nose or something like that she may not be able to do anything, but anything worse than that can probably be helped by a visit to the nurse. Plus you can get free medicine or advice with no doctor's bill

4. Go to the Doctor if Advised.

I know going to the doctor isn't fun away from home, but If the nurse thinks you need to, you should find a doctor or an Urgent care facility in case you need a prescription or something that you couldn't get over the counter.

5. Ask a Pharmacy for Help.

Some pharmacies will give you advice on what medicine to buy/take for whatever you have, so ask unless a doctor has given you a prescription.

6. Notify Your Professors.

Be sure to email your professors to let them know that you won't be in class. It's courteous and they can let you know what you'll be missing or what homework can be done for the next class.

7. Hydrate.

Drink plenty of water, its good for you whether you're sick or not. Especially if you have a fever or are throwing up, water or something with electrolytes can help to keep your body fighting.

8. Eat.

You may not want to, especially if you can't keep anything down, but your body does need fuel to fight off infection. If you're not feeling like eating, try a little soup with plain bread or saltines, they're always a classic sick day food for me. (If you really can't keep anything down, go for plain saltines or toast with just a little bit of jelly on it, NO butter.)

9. Don't Stress.

Over-stressing can cause you to get and feel worse. Stressing out only adds more problems to the situation. You're going to miss classes, and you can still get homework done depending on how sick you are, so just focus on getting better for now.

10. Turn off Netflix and Your Phone.

I know that sounds like an awful idea. Sure, enjoy it for a little while after all it is a sick day, but you also need to just be able to rest. Which leads me to my final tip.

11. Get Plenty of Rest.

Your body needs rest to heal and recuperate. Take naps and make sure you get plenty of sleep at night, your body will thank you and hopefully you'll get better faster.

All this being said, hopefully this helps you get through your sickness away from home. It can make you homesick, but don't let it. Don't forget to thank those who help you out while your sick either. Get well soon!

In case you're unaware, "resting bitch face" is the term used to describe when a person's natural, expressionless face makes it look like they are mad at the world. Whether they are walking down the street or simply spacing out thinking about what to eat for dinner, it's very easy for others to assume that this person is either upset or mad at them. Because of this, those of us with Resting Bitch Face (RBF), and especially us women, have all experienced many of the same situations and conversations, including:

We've all had a crush before. Whether it leads to something or nothing, the process has all been the same. The awkward feelings, the stalking, and the stress of trying to keep this huge secret. The feeling of becoming a total spazz is something that cannot be avoided, and the most spazzy family that can relate to this feeling is the Belcher's.

At the tender age of 18, we are bestowed with the title of “adult.” For 17 years, we live under the rules and guidelines of our parents, school, and government, and to stray from any of those rules or guidelines marks us as a rebel. At 18, though, we must choose which college we want to go to or what career we want. We are allowed and encouraged to vote. We can buy lottery tickets and cigarettes. We can drop out of school, leave our household, and do other "adult" things. At 18, we start down a path of thinking for ourselves, when for the entirety of our lives other institutions have been mandated to think and do for us.

What about those of us who don't do it all in four years?

"College will be the best four years of your life" is a phrase that we have all heard growing up. College is painted as a magical place to us while we are in high school. A place you go to learn, meet your best friends and probably have the time of your life while all of this is going down. Four whirlwind years, where everything that you've known changes and you start to learn what it means to live on your own, have a job, etc. But what about those of us who don't do this all in four years? Major changes, hard courses, switching schools, career paths changing, these are just a handful of factors that could extend your four years to five, six or seven. There is nothing wrong with taking extra time to graduate, but returning as a fifth-year is a little different. Most of your best friends have most likely graduated and moved and while you may be one of the oldest undergraduates on campus, you might feel as awkward as a freshmen. A world that became home and comfortable to you is still there but it's slightly different than you've known it to be and you have to find a groove to fall into. These are thoughts you'll have as you look ahead to returning to your college campus, with a victory lap planned.
