Midterms week – aka that hell week right before Spring Break where every paper is due, exam is given, and homework is collected – takes a toll on every college student. Wanting nothing more than to sleep and stop worrying about homework – to be somewhere on a beach college students quickly lose motivation during the difficult week leading up to SB. From optimism, to denial, to hatred, to defeat, there is no escaping the struggles of midterms. Disney Pixar’s Inside Out –which personifies the emotions of a girl named Riley through five characters (Joy, Sadness, Fear, Disgust, and Anger) – captures these midterm moments perfectly. Here are 11 times Inside Out perfectly describes every college kid during midterms week.
1. Optimism that this year will be different and you will be able to stay motivated to be focused all week so that you can go into Spring Break feeling refreshed and successful.
"All right everyone, fresh start! We're gonna have a good day, which will turn into a good week, which will turn into a good year, which will turn into a good life!" – Joy
2. You can't go out because you need to study.
“Goodbye Friendship! Hello Loneliness!” – Sadness
3. You are frustrated, so everything becomes annoying... even the things you love most.
"Congratulations San Francisco! You've ruined pizza!" – Anger
4. You go to the library for the first time all semester.
Sadness: “Wait Joy! You'll get lost in there.”
Joy: “Think positive!”
Sadness: “Okay... I'm positive that you'll get lost in there!”
5. You have been staring at your notes for too long and everything gets all mixed up.
Joy: “All these facts and opinions look the same. I can't tell them apart."
Bing Bong: “Happens to me all the time. Don't worry about it.”
6. You try to encourage your friends to keep focusing, but you can't come up with any more positive things to say.
Joy: "Okay, I admit it, we had a rough start. But think of all the good things that...”
Anger: “No, Joy. There's absolutely no reason for Riley to be happy right now. Let us handle this.”
7. You start to lose all motivation completely.
"I'm too sad to walk. Just give me a few...hours." – Sadness
8. Even your descriptions of how your day was stop making logical sense.
"On a scale of 1-10, I give this day an F." – Disgust
9. You begin to use crying as a coping mechanism.
"Crying helps me slow down and obsess over the weight of life’s problems" – Sadness
10. You decide the best way to express your emotions is too lock yourself in a room and yell about it.
“I say we lock ourselves in our room and use that one swear word we know. It's a good one!” – Anger
11. Even though it was a long week, you made it out alive... and that's what matters.
"All right! We did not die today. I call that an unqualified success!" – Fear
In the end, you will survive midterms, and you WILL get to Spring Break. Hang in there -- We are all in this together!
