Once upon a time, I was the quintessential bookworm elementary schooler with a well known adoration for a particular book series. Yet, when my friends attempted to get me to say I had a crush on Harry Potter (or Daniel Radcliffe), I was able to say with complete honesty no such crush existed. Rather, my first literary crush was on a far different figure: Fred Weasley. For some reason, this twin, with his love of mischief was far more interesting to me. And so, in honor of my elementary school heart and the fact that his and his brother's birthday is this week, I present a list of some of the Weasley Twins greatest moments.
1. That time they helped Harry when they didn't know him at all
Fred and George have huge, amazing hearts and for all their love of pranking, they're also great human beings. In Sorcerer's Stone, they help Harry get his trunk on the train despite having no idea who he is, simply because he needs help. They might gawk a bit once they realize who he his, but they still helped a scrawny eleven-year-old for no reason other than he needed assistance.
2. That time they sent Harry a toilet seat
Fred and George are incorrigible from the moment we meet them at King's Cross. Moments away from departing for their third year at Hogwarts, and still they continue to drive their mother batty by turning her scolding around on her and promising to send their sister a toilet seat. It only gets better when they actually send one to Harry while he's recuperating in the Hospital Wing.
3. That time they threw snowballs at Voldemort's face
Sadly, this scene was not included in the movies, but it remains as one of the twins most incredible moments. How many thirteen-year-olds can say that they pranked Voldemort? I mean, sure, Harry defeated him, but I would think this was far more embarrassing for the Dark Lord.
4. That time they saved Harry from the Dursleys
So yes, Ron was involved but the Twins were likely the masterminds of the operation. The twins undo the locks 'the muggle way,' drive (and likely figured out how to steal) the car, and somehow have rope to pull the bars off. Without them, Harry likely wouldn't have left the Dursleys until after he was missed at Hogwarts. They even teach him how to pick locks at some point, as he manages to pick the lock the next summer.
5. That time they gave up the Marauder's Map
Our dear, lovely Twins give to Harry the secret of their success in Prisoner of Azkaban, proving that they can be very unselfish creatures. Without this tool, Harry never would have made it to Hogsmeade and couldn't have made sure D.A. members were making it out safely.
6. That time that they accurately bet on the outcome of the QWC
"“We’ll bet thirty-seven Galleons, fifteen Sickles, three Knuts,” said Fred as he and George quickly pooled all their money, “that Ireland wins - but Viktor Krum gets the Snitch. Oh and we’ll throw in a fake wand.”" -HP GOF, J.K. Rowling
They won- although Bagman cheated them of their proper winnings- which has made fans wonder how on earth they managed to predict such an odd and specific outcome. Some think that they might be seers (unlikely) while others think they got their hands on a time turner (also unlikely- they're controlled objects, people!). Unless the Potter-Overlord, Ms. Rowling, sees it fit to tell, we'll never know just how it happened, but we can safely say the Twins are either very lucky, or very smart.
7. That time that they failed to fool Dumbledore
Ah, you brilliant pranksters, sadly, your clever efforts weren't good enough and you should have listened to Ms. Granger. As good as your potions skills are, no Ageing Potion is going to fool Dumbledore's line. Yet, even though they ended up with beards that rivalled the Headmaster's, they still came away laughing.*Sob warning ahead*
This is the only time Fred and George saw each other as old men.
8. That time that they gave up their schooling for Harry
While the twins were admittedly never huge fans of conventional education, they were only a few months from graduating when Harry needed them to distract Umbridge. Yet they still were willing to help him, erecting a portable swamp in the corridor to keep Umbridge and Filch busy so Harry could contact Sirius. When caught, they chose to leave, summoning their brooms and become legends with the famous departing words, "Give her hell from us, Peeves."9. That time they created their own joke shop and openly mocked YKW
Proving that they have all the moxie in the world and no fear, Fred and George sold a product in their brand new joke shop, Weasley's Wizard Wheezes, which they advertised as:
WHY ARE YOU WORRYING ABOUT YOU-KNOW-WHO?
YOU SHOULD BE WORRYING ABOUT
U-NO-POO--
THE CONSTIPATION SENSATION
THAT'S GRIPPING THE NATION!
Although it made their mother worry they would be murdered in their beds, it showed that laughter can go a long way toward combating fear. At a time when people scurried through the streets not talking to each other, the twins did their best
10. That time George lost his ear and they joked about it
George is lying on a couch, having lost his ear in the Great Potter Escape, and still he manages to make a joke. He knows his mother and brother are upset, and he manages to put them at ease.11. That time Fred contributed to Potterwatch
We only see one brief instance of this in the books, but Fred is a member of the Potterwatch broadcast that Ron remembers to turn into, code name Rapier. He uses humor to inform and combat the fear-filled rumors going on. Presumable, he and George contribute more than we get to see.
Mischief Managed.
