11 Thoughts We Have While Watching The Olympics
Take Off

It is Olympic season and it has everyone talking at work, on social media, and in the streets. We Americans are glued to our television screens as we cheer on Michael Phelps in the 200 meter medley or watch Simone Biles in complete fascination as she takes gold in the women's vault. The 2016 Rio Olympics seem to have brought a sense of unity to the United States as we cheer on our favorite athletes and teams. You would almost feel "un-American" if you didn't watch the games with your fellow Americans. As the games and excitement continue, here is a list of what we Americans are actually thinking as we are watching the Summer Olympic Games.

1. Michael Phelps is the GOAT.

With five out of six medals being gold, Michael Phelps is unstoppable. Whether he is staring down is opponent, taking the lead in a relay, or simply just doing what Michael Phelps does, he's on top! Plus he has adorable Boomer as a baby, he can't lose!

2. What am I doing with my life?

Oh I know, just sitting on my couch eating chips, while American athletes collect gold medals like it's easy. Maybe I should go for a run...

3. I have a sudden urge to be an Olympian myself.

Whether it's a pool, a mat, a track, or any other athletic playing field, I feel like I turn into an Olympian! Maybe if I run as fast as I possibly can I can run on the women's relay team in four years?

4. Do the Americans have dentists on standby?

So many gold medals that need to be tested by the teeth of our medalists! Surley the amount the United States will be collecting can't be healthy for their teeth right?

5. If I want to be an Olympian I need to move to Maryland.

If Maryland were a country it would actually have the third most Olympic gold medals! And to be more specific, all of the gold medals belong to the swim team! Being a Maryland girl myself, you could say I'm pretty proud to be a Marylander'!

6. Ryan Lochte was held at gun point?

Yes? Or no? The media didn't seem so sure themselves! But according to Lochte and his mother he was, but is safe, and that is all that really matters!

7. Umm why does the diving pool look like Shrek's Swamp?

Shouldn't it be a crystal blue color? According to those in charge of the Rio games, it is not harmful to the swimmers!

8. If you mess with one of our athletes, you mess with U.S.

So much rivalry in the games this year. But when you're ready come and get it because our athletes have a power house of a country to back them up!

9. "Clinton this... Trump that..." nobody has time for that, it's game time.

Blah, blah, blah it's game time and the politics can chill for now.

10. The feeling that you should be wearing bug spray for the athletes.

Zika is getting a little too serious, maybe we should wear bug spray as we sit in the safety of our homes.

11. I'm proud to be an American!

With a total of 33 medals: 16 gold, 8 silver, and 9 bronze, I sure am proud to be an American! We have the best of the best, and are better than the rest! With the lead in gold medal count, we have every right in the world to be proud of our athletes! USA!

For those long nights that turn into mornings when the struggle is real.

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate
Mental Floss

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."
