11 Thoughts Parents Have About Their College Student In The Summer

From the moment you were 16, you weren't just able to drive, you legally became the "errand runner."

When you move to college, it's a huge adjustment.

For your parents, it's an even bigger adjustment. Someone that has lived in their house for 18 years is now gone, and your room is empty. There is less conversation, more food, and less mess at their house.

Here are some thoughts they've probably had since you moved home for the summer:

1. I'm so glad he/she is home!

Believe it or not, parents miss you more than you think while you're at college. They love that you're independent (kinda) and having fun, but they definitely miss you being at home.

2. Who sleeps this much?

You know as well as I do that you sleep more than eight hours a night... and then you take naps during the day. Little do they know, you sleep more than that at school.

3. My errand runner is back

From the moment you were 16, you weren't just able to drive, you legally became the "errand runner". When you moved to college, your parents had to run all of their errands on their own. But thank God you're back!!

4. Who eats a whole meal at 3 AM?

You're used to being at school, writing papers or watching Netflix all night. You get hungry, you eat. Your parents are not used to this. Not at all. That microwave beep at 3 AM is not something they will ever get used to.

5. How does he/she watch so much Netflix?

Speaking of Netflix, for me, binging TV shows became a way of life. I won't lie and say I didn't finish 13 Reasons Why in less than two days. You know you do the same thing.

6. There is never food at home anymore

They forgot what its like to feed an extra person, so they never buy enough food anymore (I know, I blame it on them too. Its totally not because you eat all the food).

7. College kids are disgusting

You don't have anyone telling you to clean your dorm room like you did when you were in high school. Your mom really doesn't understand how you make such a mess so fast.

8. SO. MUCH. LAUNDRY.

All those free college T-shirts piled up and you brought home way more than you left with, and if you're like me, you change 13 times a day.

9. Summer classes are expensive

Your scholarship probably doesn't cover summer hours, so your parents are paying the couple thousand dollars so you can take the summer courses you need. Make sure you say thank you.

10. College kids are weird

The stuff that you do that's accepted on campus IS NOT acceptable at home. Your parents will think you're awfully strange if you drive across the yard in a barbie jeep while your peers on campus will think you're a genius.

11. I'm ready for him/her to go back

They miss you when you're gone, they're glad when you first come back, but give it time and they'll be counting down the days until move back to school.

18 Things I Want To Do Now That I'm 18

I'm technically an adult, so I'm legally required to live a little, right?

For the entirety of my high school career, I was always seen as the goody-two-shoes. I never got in trouble with a teacher, I kept stellar grades, and when I wasn't doing extracurricular activities, I was at home studying. Even when I did go out, it was usually with a bunch of fellow band geeks. The night would end before 11:00 PM and the only controversial activity would be a fight based on who unfairly won a round of Apples-to-Apples when someone else clearly had a better card (I promise I'm not still holding a grudge).

Now that I'm officially an adult, I want to pursue some new things. I want to experience life in a way that I never allowed myself to do prior to entering college. These are the years that I'm supposed to embark on a journey of self-discovery, so what better way to do that than to create a bucket list?

I've been super busy lately with school work, studying, etc. Besides the fact that I do nothing but AP chemistry and AP economics, I constantly think of stupid questions that are almost impossible to answer. So, maybe you could answer them for me, and if not then we can both wonder what the answers to these 15 questions could be.
