11 Thoughts You Have As Summer Approaches
Ashley Yakopec

Summer is so close that most of us can taste it. In less than three shorts weeks, I will be packing up my first year of college and driving back to my other home 400 miles away. I have a lot of different emotions and feelings as I begin to pack up my year. There are so many of us who are excited to go home and not have a single worry in the world, but it can also be sad to leave behind new friendships and the place we've all come to know and love. Although it may be for only a couple of short months, those months can be long when away from the people we have all grown accustomed to seeing. So below are just some thoughts we've all probably had at least once lately:

1. How will I survive without my college friends?

Yeah, we miss our family, but all these people we've gotten to know and love have become our home away from home, and it's sometimes hard to see life without them now, too. After this year, we've all found some pretty awesome and amazing friends that may not always be reachable in person when we live states away for the summer.

2. Really great to not have any summer plans

I feel absolutely NO stress about anything I have to do this summer since everything I'm doing is completely unknown to me at the moment. Nothing could be better than relaxing after a stress-filled year of school.

3. Where should my first meal home be?

For sure Pepperjax. One thing that I miss here in Stillwater, Oklahoma is Pepperjax. So if corporate is reading this message, Stillwater needs this amazing restaurant close to campus!

4. Will my mom yell at me for my sleeping habits of sleeping in?

I'm sleeping late because it's all the sleep I've missed out on this semester, not because I'm lazy, I promise.

5. Okay, I can probably last the rest of this semester with $15 to my name, right?

It might be nice to cut back on the spending, but it might also be hard, too.

6. Maybe instead of unpacking at home, I'll just live out of boxes until it's time to go again.

Let's be honest, we have all thought about keeping those boxes packed to save some time at the end of the summer. Who likes unpacking anyways?

7. I'm finally going to have real food soon.

We all miss mom's home cooked meals when we're away at college. Nothing tastes better than her meals when we're used to eating cheap food.

8. I wish my meal plan reached home so I wouldn't have to spend money on food again.

A meal plan was a blessing in disguise this year. Who knew how handy it would be to swipe a card with money you don't have yet?

9. I'm going to miss Tapingo.

Having a text be sent to your phone when your food or drink is ready has been amazing. I definitely wish Omaha would bring this into the city.

10. Man, I'm really excited to see my family.

It's always nice to have a warm welcome home after being away for so long. In three weeks, I'll be home!

11. How will I adjust from being busy every night to doing nothing at home?

Whether it's council meetings or hanging out with friends, there is a never a dull moment on campus. I'm thankful for all the time well spent, but now what do I do for a whole summer without plans?!

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
