Adopting a dog can be one of the best decisions you ever make, as long as you are fully prepared to give them all the care they need to be happy and healthy. This is a comprehensive list that will give you a decent idea of whether or not you should actually follow through with your recent puppy fever or not.
1. Dogs need to be spayed and neutered.
When they aren’t, they are at risk for a bunch of unnecessary and painful health problems. There are low-cost clinics where you can get this done for 50 bucks. Use the internet to find them.
2. Dogs need vaccines at least once a year.
(This costs money.)
3. Dogs need heart-worm and flea medication once a month.
(This costs money.)
4. Dogs need their nails trimmed once a month.
(This costs money.)
5. If you cannot afford healthcare for your dog...YOU SHOULD NOT GET A DOG.
Adopting a dog is a huge financial commitment, and if you are not prepared to spend money to give your dog the care it needs, then maybe you should rethink your decision.
6. Dogs need to go to the bathroom at least every 4 to 6 hours.
You can’t leave them alone for any longer than that. If you plan to leave them alone for an extended period of time, you need to find a responsible dog-sitter.
7. Dogs need structure.
Throughout history, dogs have been bred to do different jobs. Chances are, your dog has some of these working genes in them, and being able to follow their owners' commands is natural and fulfilling. Happy dogs are dogs with training.
8. Dogs need exercise.
They need to be walked, played with, and taken to the dog park. Not exercising your dog is basically like not playing with your child. Happy dogs are well-exercised dogs.
9. Puppies are cute, but they always become dogs.
Which leads to my next point...
10. Dogs are a long-term commitment.
Most dogs live between 10 to 15 years, and when you adopt them, you are agreeing to care for them for the rest of their lives. Giving up a puppy because they get too old or "aren't cute anymore" is honestly heartless.
11. Dogs will destroy things.
They will chew up your favorite pair of shoes, get into your expensive makeup, drink out of the toilet, and have accidents on your furniture. It's not because they want to mess up your stuff, it just happens sometimes. Be prepared for this. Learn how to deal with them constructively.
Dogs are known as “man’s best friend” for a reason. They are devoted and sweet and will be there for you during some of the most difficult times of your life. So, taking care of their health and happiness and being a responsible owner is the least we can do to repay their unconditional love. If you are not at a place in your life where you can meet all of the needs listed above, then maybe you should skip the pup adoption for now. Maybe try a pet rock!
