11 Things You Love Getting Now That You're (Kind-Of) An Adult

Our wishlists are a lot different now.

When I was 12 years old, my favorite holidays were Christmas and my birthday because what kid doesn’t love to open up a bunch of presents that they’re been asking for all year long? My lists usually included something like a four wheeler, play makeup, the cutest and latest outfits from Rue21, games, and brand new boots. I’m one month away from being 21 and when I tell you that my wish list has C H A N G E D drastically, it’s no exaggeration…. and I’m sure I’m not the only one who feels this way. Here are 11 things that all of us “super broke, super stressed, and super tired college students” love receiving.

1. Food

I couldn’t count on one hand how many times I’ve had the same thing for dinner a week in a row because grocery shopping is the WORST! There is nothing like getting a package in the mail from your mom and opening it to see your favorite snacks and easy-to-make dinners.

2. Blankets

I can’t go to the library to pull an all-nighter without my favorite little throw blanket. I have at least one in my trunk, room, and living room at all times.

3. Toiletry Items

I swear I would run out of toothpaste every month if it weren’t for my mom’s packages that she send. This woman is 4 hours away from me and still knows that I forget to buy dental floss and shampoo on a daily basis.

4. Planners

Let’s face it … we all love anything that makes us look like our life is together. A friend of mine gave me a planner she never used a few weeks ago and I take it around with me like it’s my child. My life is an absolute MESS… but my planner makes it look like such a cute, color coded mess.

5. Socks

I HATED socks as a child. I felt it was the ultimate form of disrespect when I would unwrap a box and look in it to see a 6 pack of them at Christmas. Now what do I do when I receive socks at any time of the year? Jump for joy and immediately put them on.

6. Pillows

When I want to splurge on myself, the first thing I think of is pillows… but it never happens because I’d much rather spend my money on sushi. Getting brand new pillows as a gift is a BLESSING.

7. Sweatshirts

Fall and winter are my two favorite seasons, mostly because I love cold weather.. and with cold weather comes the need for sweaters, sweatshirts, and cardigans.

8. Discount Cards/Gift Cards

I LOVE GIFT CARDS. Starbucks, Walmart, Chick-Fil-A… you name it, I love it.

9. Books

If I’m told to read a book (#classes), I hate it and 9 times out of 10, I won’t actually do it. On the other hand, if I am given a book that has anything to do with something I am truly interested in, then you can bet I will take it home and read the whole thing that night.

10. Handwritten Letters

Last month I received a letter from my aunt that just told me how much she loved me and how proud she was of me. I cried for at least 45 minutes and still have it hanging up in my room. Handwritten letters are sadly a thing of the past for the most part, but I can promise if I get one.. it will not go unnoticed by any means.

11. Money

We are college students… and we are BROKE. At the end of the day, 20 bucks can get us gas, food, or medicine when we’re sick. No matter the amount, we are thankful for every penny.

So, as the holidays approach, remember us - we are surely just "Young, Dumb, and BROKE"... aren't all college students?

College is super hard. Between working, studying, and having a social life, it feels like a struggle to just keep afloat.

I understand. When you feel like your drowning and there's no way to stay afloat I understand that it feels like everyone else is doing just fine. I understand all the frustration, long nights in the library, and that feeling that you want to just throw in the towel. I understand that sometimes it's too hard to get out of bed because your brain is already filled with too much information to remember. I understand because I am also feeling pretty burnt out.

No Matter How Challenging School Gets, You Have To Put Your Health First — A Degree Won't Mean Anything If You're Dead

Some of the best advice I've ever received was from my social studies teacher in sophomore year of high school. He stated, "If you don't know it at midnight, you're not going to know it for the 8 a.m. exam, so get some sleep."

It's such a simple piece of advice, but it holds so much accuracy and it's something that the majority of college students need to hear and listen to. "All-nighters" are a commonality on college campuses in order to cram in studying for an exam that is typically the next day.

Obsessive Thoughts Keep My Brain Stuck On A Loop And Me Stuck On My Couch

Sometimes my brain just starts turning on an idea and it doesn't want to stop.

I don't know if it is related to my anxiety, perfectionism or depression. I don't know why it happens. It's frustrating, it's painful and it stops me from functioning.

This is for the girls who have dealt with an emotionally, mentally, physically or verbally abusive father.

The ones who have grown up with a false lens of what love is and how relationships should be. The ones who have cried themselves to sleep wondering why he hurts you and your family so much. This is for all the girls who fall in love with broken boys that carry baggage bigger than their own, thinking it's their job to heal them because you watched your mother do the same.
