11 Things We Regret Doing in Middle School

Middle school was an interesting time in all of our lives. It was a time of heartbreak, of thinking we were cool, of weird style trends, and of thinking the kid in eighth grade would like us back. However, we do regret doing some of these things and wish we could have saved ourselves from a lot of these embarrassment-inducing behaviors. Here is a list of things we regret doing in middle school.

1. Using AIM and making sure you give a shoutout to ALL of your friends in your "away" message.

AIM was our main method of communication. No one in 2008 asked for phone numbers. Texting wasn't even a thing back in the olden days. We all exchanged AIM usernames resembling "x0x0sweetangel12345." They were very creative indeed, but it would have probably been easier to exchange phone numbers. The great thing about AIM was making away messages. We often used them to pay tribute to our many, many friends, being extra careful not to forget anyone's initials.

2. Spending too much money on your Silly Bandz collection.

Who cares about Rolex watches? Silly Bandz were the ultimate sign of being cool in middle school. We all waited until lunchtime to trade our "puppy" bracelet for our friend's "dolphin." We saved our weekly allowance to buy a new pack of aquatic animal Silly Bandz to add them to our growing collection. Who knows where they are now.

3. Wearing Aeropostale.

We were all guilty of this one. Our wardrobes were incomplete without a collection of Aeropostale sweats and T-shirts. Now they are carefully tucked away in our closets or worn as pajamas.

4. Typing using numbers and symbols.

Everyone loved typing "l1k3 d1s." We thought it was cool and creative! Little did we know at the time that it wasn't at all legible and it certainly was something better to be left in middle school! Imagine emailing a professor with our 2008 text lingo now.

5. The side-bangs and highlights phase.

Every girl in middle school loved side-bangs and highlights. It was hard to walk through school without seeing a girl without them. However, when the trend faded, we were all waiting in anxiety for our side-bangs to grow out to get back to normal again and to get rid of the oddly-colored highlights.

6. Tagging your friends in these pictures on Facebook.

We have all been tagged in one of these charts before, truly identifying who we were as a person. These charts were taken seriously and we put a lot of thought into which of our friends "has pretty eyes" and which one is an "animal lover." There often was a dilemma of choosing just one person for each box, so we chose multiple, resulting in millions of notifications and filling us with regret.

7. Over-editing your pictures on Picnik.

If your pictures were not edited on Picnik, they weren't Facebook ready. No picture was complete without that font that looked like handwriting paired with a corny, generic quote.

8. Making Taylor Swift lyrics your Facebook Status.

Taylor Swift is the one person who completely understood your middle school love life. It felt appropriate to constantly quote "Love Story" in hopes that your crush would see it but unfortunately, he was too busy playing video games.

9. Liking Facebook statuses for a "rate."

If you don't know what a "rate" is, it's when your Facebook friends offer to rate your appearance on a scale of 1-10. It was a voluntary service. Liking these statuses meant that you had confidence in your appearance that day and you were really "feeling yourself." However, we would often get a disappointing "7.33334" once in a while which ruined our self esteem. When we made these statuses offering to "rate" our friends, we would secretly hope that our crush liked it so we can really tell him how we feel.

10. Mirror pictures with the flash on.

We all have a picture like this with one of our friends hidden in the depths of our current Facebook profiles. The glare from the flash covering our faces just screamed "cool." We were ecstatic to get 20 likes on a photo like this.

11. The Hair-Feather Craze.

This trend was completely random and unexplained but we did it anyways because everyone else was doing it, even our favorite "Wizards of Waverly Place" star, Selena Gomez.

As we can all see, middle school was a strange time and is truly a moment in life that we all want to delete from our memories and everyone else's. To all of the middle schoolers out there, save yourselves the embarrassment and keep the Aeropostale shirts in the closet!

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."
