11 Things That Go Through Your Head While Skiing For The Very First Time

This past weekend, I was given the opportunity to go skiing for the very first time. To say it was a wild adventure would be an understatement. I received many bruises and tried to help other along the way, even though I was epically failing myself. So here are 11 things that went through my head and would probably go through yours too.

1. OMG, I cannot believe I am about to do this!

As you are driving to your destination, whether it be 10 minutes away or five hours away, the excitement as well as the nerves kick in. You have never been skiing, so you don't really know what to expect. Many people have told you, "Oh, it is so much fun, you will love it and catch on quick." You take their thoughts into consideration as you mentally prepare yourself for this new experience.

2. I have to walk up this huge mountain of stairs just to get to the lodge?

So, you arrive and discover that you have to walk up a flight of stairs located on this mountain just to get to were you actually are supposed to be. You think, "Oh, it won't be too bad," but then you actually start walking up them. With your many layers of clothes, you start to get hot and wonder why you decided to do this.

3. How am I supposed to carry all of this stuff when I have like 30 layers of clothes on.

When you first get there, you receive your boots to try on to make sure they fit. They then tell you to take them to get your skis, which you also have to carry. After that, you have to take off your other shoes, which adds to your list of things you have to carry. Do they expect us to have like, eight arms and legs? Sorry but I am not an octopus.

4. Why are there so many people in my way?

The room suddenly starts getting more and more packed, and you start to experience some anxiety. They really should make that one room bigger. You are fighting just to move from one end of the room to the other.

5. Oh hey, you are cute! Will you show me how to ski?

What they didn't tell you was that there would be cute guys everywhere. If you are feeling frisky, just go on up to one and ask them to help you with your boots or if they will teach you how to ski.

6. OK, time to go outside and do this.

The time has arrived to actually go outside now. Your heart is beating 100 miles per hour, and you think it may explode. The doors open, and you are in front of a mountain full of skiers and snowboarders.

7. Wow, its actually pretty cold out here, I should've worn more layers.

Even though you thought you had way too many layers on before you got outside, once you are standing there, you realize how cold it truly is and question why you didn't put more layers on.

8. Putting these skis on is harder than I thought.

Who knew that putting skis on was so hard? Your first one is a breeze, but then your second one is out of the question. You are slipping around everywhere with your one ski, while you are trying to get the other on.

9. Holy Cow, I am about to fall!

You finally have successfully put both skis on and are ready to go. You start down the mini hill and immediately regret it. It is so slippery, and you aren't sure what to do with your feet or poles.

10. How do I control myself with these skinny little poles?

Speaking of poles, how am I supposed to control myself with these two scrawny poles. Like, they couldn't have made something more sturdy and reliable?

11. OMG, I fell and cannot get up. I'm finished!

Your friend runs into another friend and falls down. You go help her get up but seconds later, you fall just standing there. You struggle to get up, so you just decide to take off your skis and be finished for the day. Better luck next time!

Overall, I truly enjoyed my time trying to learn how to ski, even though I fell and couldn't get up. I encourage all of you to get out there and try something brand new—you never know what you could get out of it.

Summer: a time (usually) free from school work and a time to relax with your friends and family. Maybe you go on a vacation or maybe you work all summer, but the time off really does help. When you're in college you become super close with so many people it's hard to think that you won't see many of them for three months. But, then you get that text saying, "Hey, clear your schedule next weekend, I'm coming up" and you begin to flip out. Here are the emotions you go through as your best friend makes her trip to your house.

Winter break is over, we're all back at our respective colleges, and the first week of classes is underway. This is a little bit how that week tends to go.

The professor starts to go over something more than the syllabus

You get homework assigned on the first day of class

There are multiple group projects on the syllabus

You learn attendance is mandatory and will be taken every class

Professor starts chatting about their personal life and what inspired them to teach this class

Participation is mandatory and you have to play "icebreaker games"

Everybody is going out because its 'syllabus week' but you're laying in bed watching Grey's Anatomy

Looking outside anytime past 8 PM every night of this week

Nobody actually has any idea what's happening this entire week

Syllabus week is over and you realize you actually have to try now...or not

Now it's time to get back into the REAL swing of things. Second semester is really here and we all have to deal with it.

panera bread

Whether you specialized in ringing people up or preparing the food, if you worked at Panera Bread it holds a special place in your heart. Here are some signs that you worked at Panera in high school.

1. You own so many pairs of khaki pants you don’t even know what to do with them

Definitely the worst part about working at Panera was the uniform and having someone cute come in. Please don’t look at me in my hat.

7 Ways to Make Your Language More Transgender and Nonbinary Inclusive

With more people becoming aware of transgender and non-binary people, there have been a lot of questions circulating online and elsewhere about how to be more inclusive. Language is very important in making a space safer for trans and non-binary individuals. With language, there is an established and built-in measure of whether a place could be safe or unsafe. If the wrong language is used, the place is unsafe and shows a lack of education on trans and non-binary issues. With the right language and education, there can be more safe spaces for trans and non-binary people to exist without feeling the need to hide their identities or feel threatened for merely existing.
