I've been a competitive swimmer for thirteen years (don't you go thinkin' I'm some great swimmer though). And with those years of experience I've learned that a majority of swimmers usually think the same during practice. So I've decided to compile a list of the top things swimmers are thinking about during practice!
11. DAMN IT!
The thought that usually occurs as the coach is giving you your set. Or maybe it's another curse word, this is the only one I could write without getting a call from my grandma.
10. Wait what's the set?
I don't know, maybe I just black out after hearing it, or just don't want to focus on it, but usually after hearing the set, I need it explained like two more times.
9. Nope.
I don't want to go in there, do I have to go in there, what if I just leave? Several of many when you think about jumping in the water, you're literally just like meh.
8. Morning Practice
I just...I just...I get tired just thinking about it honestly. SOS SEND HELP AND COFFEE.
7. The anger over your favorite suit being wet
ARGH. It's so infuriating, like honestly you feel so betrayed like "I hung you up last night, to dry. How dare you be wet?!?"
6. The frustration of people not leaving on time
So if you don't know, we have all of our sets timed on a clock (like a digital one), but people will leave either before or after when we are supposed to leave and I'm just like "Wait we have more time!"
5. Pasta Suppers
Probably the best part of the seasons are when the team all gets together for pasta suppers, there just super supportive and of course there is a ton of food because we all know how we eat.
4. When someone who hasn't swam before talks about racing you...
I am slow, I understand that fact and have fully accepted it and come to terms with it, and I have no problems with it. But what I do have a problem with is when a non swimmer walks up to me and says they can do a 500 in 20 seconds, even after I explain that it's in yards they still insist that they can do it. What the heck?
3. Holy canoli it's cool down
That beautiful soul lifting feeling that signifies the end of practice. Ugh, I get excited just thinking about it!
2. Wanting to quit but knowing you never will
Everyday after practice I used to get the question, why would I do this? What makes me put myself through this? How could I ever do this to myself? And even when it's unbearably hard, even when I think I can't go on I do. And I know no matter what I always will.
1. FOOD
I know I took a serious not up there but the number one thought we all have is where is the food, will we be eating after this, could someone bring me food, I hope they have pizza at the dining halls tonight...and so on and so forth.
