11 Things People With Chronic Illness Are Tired Of Hearing

CHRONIC (ˈkränik/) adj:

1. (of an illness) persisting for a long time or constantly recurring.

2. (of a person) having an illness persisting for a long time or constantly recurring.

3. (of a problem) long-lasting and difficult to eradicate.

For those of us suffering from chronic illness, whether it be asthma, IBD, RA, MS, diabetes, lupus, or any of chronic, reoccurring (read: never-ending) illness, things can be tough. This is especially true for those of us with loved ones who don't have a chronic illness--they want to help as much as possible, but it can be frustrating, as much of the time there simply isn't anything the can do.

1. "You look so tired!"

Yep, thanks for noticing that. Our bodies are constantly fighting, and many times we can't sleep through the night for various reasons.

2. "You've lost weight."

While this may be a complement for those actively trying to drop a few pounds, for those with chronic illness, this tends to be a sign that they're losing a battle at the moment.

3. And its evil cousin, "have you gained weight?"

Yeah, we're not friends anymore if you say this.

4. "Weren't you just sick?"

What part of chronic are you not understanding?

5. "Just follow this/that diet."

While avoiding some foods may help some, for the majority of those suffering from chronic illness, it does diddly squat. Stop pretending it does, especially when it's a fad diet.

6. "My cousin's uncle's ex-girlfriend's nephew has that."

Yes, because we all have the same circumstances, right?

7. "Have you tried XYZ holistic approach?"

See "Just follow this/that diet."

8. "You just gotta tough it out."

Wow! Now I'm magically cured! Thanks!!

9. "You're cancelling again?"

One of the worst things you can do as the friend/loved one/family member of someone with a chronic illness is make them feel bad about having it. They obviously don't feel up to doing whatever activity you had planned, please try to be understanding.

10. "Just relax."

Now I'm all better! How did you know that would work?

11. "You don't look sick."

If you ever say this to someone with a chronic illness, please feel free to reevaluate your friendship. Just because we may not look sick at the moment, definitely does not mean that we aren't sick.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.

Thanksgiving break is over and Christmas is just around the corner and that means, for most college students, one hellish thing — finals week. It's the one time of year in which the library becomes over populated and mental breakdowns are most frequent. There is no way to avoid it or a cure for the pain that it brings. All we can do is hunker down with our books, order some Dominos, and pray that it will all be over soon. Luckily, we are not alone in this suffering. To prove it, here are just a few of the many deranged thoughts that go through a college student's mind during finals week.

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.
