11 Things Only "Mommy's Girls" Understand

We all know the terms "mama's boy" and "daddy's girl," but what about "mommy's girl?" As the baby girl of two big brothers, I have always had a special bond with my mom, the only other female in our family. So, here is a list of things only "mommy's girls," like me, will understand.

1. You have been by her side since day one.

Let’s face it, you two have been a package deal since the beginning, and you wouldn’t have it any other way. Whatever your mom was doing, you were, too (and you’re still happy to keep it that way whenever you see her).

2. When you were a little girl, you sort of thought you’d just grow up to be her.

It only made sense. You spent all sorts of time with her, trying to be just like her anyway you could.

3. She is the first person you call when anything exciting happens.

Aced your math test? Got a great deal on a new dress? Free coffee at Starbucks? She gets a phone call, and she is equally, if not more, excited than you are.

4. Someone telling you you resemble her is one of the best compliments you could receive.

There is plainly nothing better than someone telling you that you remind them of your mother. She is the best. Why wouldn’t you be happy to hear that someone sees some similarities?

5. There are certain things you have made a habit of doing together.

Shopping, getting your nails done, holiday baking, beach walks, coffee dates – between the two of you, there is a list of activities designated for the time you spend together.

6. Any message from her can make your day 10 times better.

It doesn’t matter if it’s an email, text or choppy voicemail she left you while she was driving home, anything from your mom can turn your day around.

7. She would drop anything to be by your side.

You could be 15 minutes across town or three hours from home, she will be there.

8. She can always make you laugh when need it.

She is your own personal comedian, always managing to swoop in with a joke or a funny story when you need it most.

9. You go to her when you need advice on anything and everything.

She is not just your go-to for something exciting, she is also the first person you reach out to when in need of some advice. No matter how big or small, silly or serious, she is always there to offer her wisdom (and you love her for that).

10. You’re secretly most excited to see her when you go home from college.

Sure, you’re happy to see the rest of your family, but deep down, you are most excited to see just one of them. You can’t help it. It is what it is.

11. She is your hero.

If your mom is anything like mine – kindhearted, incredibly hard working, always putting others before herself, constantly impressing you by being the human being she is – it is no question that you look up to her. Even though you're supposed to be an adult now, you'd still be happy if, somewhere down the line, you become even half the woman she is.

I love you, Mommy.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
