I can’t lie and say I didn’t lose a little hope for finding true love after hearing about the Brangelina breakup. However, I am pretty sick of hearing about it. I can admit that it is shocking news, but I don’t think everyone needs to continue to dabble in Brad and Angelina’s personal problems. We need to remember that these people were once the loves of each other’s lives. Everyone has once experienced some sort of heartbreak in their life and I’m sure you wouldn’t want this heartbreak plastered all over every website, news stand, and news story on national television. Not only is it insensitive to these two people, but it’s malicious and hurtful to their children. A lot of people come from divorced families and it is not something that is easy for any spouse to go through and it most definitely is not easy for their children. Brangelina may be over, but their kids need for the love of both their parents will never be over.

I’ve had enough of all the sick Jennifer Aniston jokes…please leave Rachel alone, they were absolutely not on a break and she has nothing to do with this. I’m not sure why humans find it entertaining to make jokes about celebrity’s despairs, but I’ve seen one too many memes and it’s really getting out of hand. So let’s discuss eleven other things we could be talking about instead of wasting our time and energy fueling off of other people’s tribulations.

1. Brock Turner is out of jail

Let’s not forget about everyone’s least favorite person. Let’s also not forget about the poor girl that has to live with what this boy did to her for the rest of her life. Instead of bringing down Brangelina, let’s put forth our energy to reach out to rape victims and other sexually abused men and women who need our help, love and support.

2. The violent protest in Charlotte

Recently, a father of seven was killed by police in an apartment complex. The officers were looking for another man with a warrant and they mistook this man for the actual person they were looking for. Keith Scott, father to seven, was unarmed and sitting in his car reading a book, waiting for his son to come home from school. I’m sorry to the Scott family that this isn’t being talked about more and is being overshadowed by inconsequential events. Your family is in my prayers.

3. It’s cancer awareness month

There are people that are hooked up to machines four or five days a week to try to beat their cancer. These people need our love and support and our fundraising efforts to find a cure. So many people have been affected by cancer, whether it’s you or a loved one. These reasons are why it’s important to not let these unforeseen events take up too much of the spotlight. I would much rather hear a story about an amazing soul that has a supreme outlook on life, who fought and won a battle, than to turn on the TV and hear more jargon about a breakup.

4. An air force pilot was killed in a plane crash in northern California

This is something else that I haven’t heard much about in the news. It’s so important for us to take a few seconds out of our day to honor those who risk their lives for us. Without these people, we would not have our freedom.

5. Tap water has chromium-6 in it

It is true. Scientist and researches have found that this chemical, often found in rocks, has been found in tap water across the US. Around 218 million Americans have water that contains levels of chromium-6 that environmentalists consider dangerous. This is a potentially cancer-causing chemical when it comes across and combines with other chemicals found in water. I think this is way more important than Brangelina for obvious reasons.

6. Eggo waffles have been recalled

This is just wonderful because I ate a waffle yesterday. so I hope I don’t get listeria. Thank you society for plastering Brad and Angelina everywhere, but not the fact that one of my favorite and most important meals is possibly going to make me deathly ill.

7. The bus driver hero

There were 20 kids on a burning bus and the bus driver leaped into this flaming ride and saved every single child. This woman needs some recognition for her bravery and selflessness.

8. Homecoming Proposals

It’s the most wonderful time of the year. What boy can come up with the most clever way of asking a girl to homecoming? I’ve had quite a few awesome proposals in my lifetime, but no offense, nothing compared to what a school did for two kids who have Cerebral Palsy. Paul asked Gabbie with a sign and flowers to homecoming in front of the entire school at a football game. The whole school was behind it and there was not a dry eye into the stadium. Not only is this story touching considering this experience will change their lives, but it also has brought forth awareness. They aren’t letting their disease hold them back, and their parents get to see them all dressed up and ready to take on homecoming for the first time.

9. Gang violence in south Chicago

A pregnant woman was sitting in her car in a parking lot with her boyfriend and suddenly out of nowhere a man came up and shot them both. The man survived. However, the woman did not. Doctors were able to save the pregnant woman’s baby, but now this baby does not have a mother due to this gang violence, which has been seen all throughout Chicago.

10. Bombings in New York and New Jersey

There were bombings last week in both New York and New Jersey and I’ve seen more about Brangelina’s breakup than all the people who were injured. Something is not right about that.

11. An innocent black man got 1 million dollars for spending 39 years in jail

An innocent man was convicted of a murder he did not even commit and spent 39 years in prison for it. When he received this money he wasn’t bitter nor resentful but thankful that he could finally live again. He had every reason to hate the world, but instead he chose to be grateful, which is admirable.

Brangelina, I am so sorry that the world is so caught up in your heartache, but just know that my heart hurts too because I wish that as a society we could talk about things that actually get us places instead of just hurting people we do not even know.

Sorority
Rebekah Lee

I remember my freshman year oh so well. I remember feeling terrified the night before orientation. The one thing that I dreaded the most was not the new people, the new environment, or even the academic pressure. I was dreading having to talk to sorority girls about Recruitment. I remember cutting off and avoiding any Rho Gamma/Panhellenic Officer that came my way during First Week. I looked at them like they had asked me to cut my arm off whenever they asked me if I wanted to rush. To be honest, I did not even know what rush was, but I knew that I did NOT want to be a part of it. To me, it was dumb. It was a waste of money. It was a waste of my time.

And guess what? I did not rush my freshman year. I spent the first half of my freshman year isolating myself from everyone on campus. I spent all of my time in the library, and then (since I was a commuter) went back home once my work was finished.

Tiana would no doubt be disappointed in the food our cafeteria has to offer.

And hopefully she would cook for everyone in her dorm.

She definitley would not take any 8:00 am classes because she would be up late baking and cleaning up the communal kitchen that are available in every dorm.
