As August comes to an end and summer rolls into fall, the annual migration of millions of college students is about to begin. For Brandeis, we'll be welcoming back just over 3,600 undergraduates. And as you rush (or maybe procrastinate) to pack everything you need for the year ahead, it's always good time to remember all the things to look forward to on campus. So allow me to present to you: just 11 things to love about Brandeis!
1. The strong sense of social justice
Right from its founding, Brandeis has been about combating injustices and providing a safe space for all. Today, students still feel a powerful drive to strive for equality and aren't afraid to have their voices and thoughts heard.
2. The beautiful campus
I'm not sure if you've ever been on campus at Brandeis, but if you have, you know exactly what I'm talking about. In the fall, you can look forward to the gorgeous color all the leaves turn. In the spring, the campus is flush in a glowing green as trees and flowers make their return.
3. Usen Castle
While plenty of upperclassmen can tell you that the Castle becomes far less interesting as the years pass, you've got to admit—a castle on campus is pretty damn cool.
4. The Three Chapels
One of my personal favorite things about Brandeis are its three chapels—easily found nestled around a heart-shaped pond. I think it's absolutely fascinating that the chapels are built specifically so that when the sun sets, none of the shadows are cast over one of the other buildings. It's just one of the many details that shows the school's emphasis on social justice.
5. Cholmodeley's Coffee House—or just Chums
There always seems to be something going on at this student-run coffee shop tucked away in the Castle. Not only is it a social hotspot, but it's chock-full of history, posing as the venue spot for such performers as Tracy Chapman and Joan Baez. And if that's not enough for you, you should also know that Chums is the inspiration for "Friends'" own Central Perk.
6. The Rose Art Museum
If you thought Brandeis couldn't get any cooler, then let me introduce the art museum we have right on campus. Not only can students have near immediate access to art of all kinds, but you can also request to have one of the many pieces on display hung in your own dorm. Just don't touch Warhol's stuff.
7. The proximity to Boston
While Brandeis has its own campus spanning about 235 acres, it's still just a train ride away from Boston and Cambridge. So you can enjoy the privacy of a small campus but at the same time, connect with the students who also spend the year at other local colleges.
8. The 24-Hour Musical
C'mon. C'mon. What's more fun than trying to put together a musical in 24 hours and watching a cast of 200 students struggle to perform it? Nothing.
9. The annual Liquid Latex show
Every year for almost 15 years now, the students at Brandeis have put together a live show by covering themselves in liquid latex. Once you get past how awkward it is to explain to your confused friends and family the nature of the event, it's pretty awesome that so many people are willing to put themselves out there and perform. Also: liquid latex.
10. Springfest
Right before the end of the spring semester, Brandeis hosts a huge concert of music and general fun for all the students. This concert is free. Yes, I said free. A whole variety of musicians have stopped by the campus, including Jessie J, Kendrick Lamar, and American Authors.
11. And last but not least—the students!
With such a small number of undergraduate students, the community at Brandeis is a close and tightly-knit one. Not only that, but the students—true to their love for social justice—are always supportive and ready to help a fellow student out. Their dedication to community service is also incredibly admirable. Honestly, there is no better student family to be a part of than the one at Brandeis and I can't wait to see you all next week!
