11 Things I Learned In My First Month Of College
Ariel Dumont

Almost a whole month into college and I am looking back just realizing how much I have grown within the past month. College is such a huge change in everyone's life and I only began to believe that when college began. All of the preparation in high school saying the four most important years of your life are ahead of you gets old so you begin to just become numb to it. My attitude towards anything college come second half senior year was "ENOUGH". They teach you everything but the essentials when about to go into college. Here is what I have learned since I started.

1. I have to walk how far for my 8 am class? You thought walking that flight of stairs in high school was bad...you have no idea what is ahead of you.

2. I feel lost without my parents but I am going to act like I have my life together. Okay, don't lie. It happens to all of us. We all miss mom and dad and their unconditional love.

3. I need to lay off the unlimited soft serve ice cream machine but I seriously cannot. Call it stress eating if you want but I am practically eating half my weight in ice cream everyday.

4. Making friends is a lot harder than I remembered. We may act friendly to everybody we meet but we might not even see them again for two weeks. I miss my high school friends.

5. The workload is a lot but I can actually do it, maybe. I have always been nervous about what I was going to do in college with all the work because I knew I could not handle it. Surprisingly, I am and I feel way more motivated than I did in high school.

6. I can save my non existent money and get deals on Amazon prime, spotify and such! No money? It's okay because even knowing you could get savings on some stores is good enough.

7. Thank god someone I know, and love, goes here. I could not imagine going through those first couple of days without my boyfriend by my side. Highly recommend sticking by some high school classmates you may find going to the same college. You will need them as much as they need you.

8. It is a new beginning. It feels good to be a new freshmen. Not very well known. You are no longer your older brother or sisters sibling. You are your own person, enjoy it.

9. I could have bought a new car with all that money I spent on textbooks. Well, not necessarily but that is what it feels like in the moment. It hurts but it is worth it.

10. DO NOT think about all the debt you are going to have when leaving college. You will reconsider everything, even if you love it. Money is important, but so is college for some jobs so just do not think about it.

11. I miss high school. I left that place thinking I would never think about it again but here I am. Those friday night football games, powderpuff dances, homecoming, prom. It is so sad to think that is over but looking ahead, there is so much to look forward to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
