11 Things I Learned My First Semester At UD

Hint: It's not high school.

  1. Literally no one cares how you are dressed for class.

At least for me, wearing a uniform in high school and then going to college and wearing whatever I want every day was a huge adjustment. When we were able to “dress down” everyone usually tried to look their best. But in class at college, no one really gives a crap what the person next to them is wearing. Which is awesome because if you feel like rolling out of bed, brushing your teeth and going to class, that’s okay, and so is dressing up if you’re feeling yourself or just need a boost of confidence.

2. A pregame with some good music and your gal pals will most likely be more fun than the actual party (but still go out).

Being crammed in a tiny dorm room with five+ of your close friends blasting music will make for some pretty good memories… probably better ones than that frat party you’re planning on going to. But what’s fun about the pregame if there’s nowhere to go after?

3. This isn't high school, so if you don't want someone in your life they don't have to be.

You aren’t stuck with the same people all day every day. You’re also an adult now. If you don’t like the way someone is treating you or just in general aren’t a fan of someone, you should and can voice yourself about it.

4. In regards to high school, you'll meet your best friends in college despite how "close" you were with your high school friends.

Writing this while on UD’s infamous winter break makes this an especially important point. Coming home is cool for, like, two weeks. Then you just want to go back to school and see all the people you have become close with.

5. There is no such thing as wearing a jacket to a frat party. Either deal with the cold or be prepared to lose/have your jacket stolen.

Get a cute new jacket? Save it for a dage. If you wear it to a frat party, it’ll either get soaked in sweat and “frat sludge” or you’ll leave it somewhere in the house. We don’t fear the cold here at UD.

6. Calling 911 for your drunk friend(s) isn't as scary as you think it is.

Being able to take care of and be responsible for a sick friend is an amazing feeling (after the whole situation is over, of course). ALWAYS get your friend help, you never want to risk not calling.

7. Your friends will make stupid decisions with boys, but that's okay. Just be there for them when they realize they were being dumb.

This one should be self-explanatory.

8. Dorm life sucks because you live in a cube but it's awesome because all your close friends are just down the hall or in the next building over.

Picture this: going on vacation with your best friends…except it’s not vacation. You literally live with them.

9. Check the dining hall menu before you go there.

The CampusDish app is a life-saver. If you see something on the menu you really want, you know exactly where to go. If there’s nothing you want, it saves you a meal swipe and you have the option to look at the other on-campus menus or get take-out.

10. It is possible to get good grades and go out on week nights if you put in the effort.

Don’t let your work slack if you decide to go out on week nights. If you can’t handle the work-load, going out, and having class the next morning, take my word and just stay in. But if you do go out, if you give your all I promise your grades won’t suffer from going out.

11. Make friends in your classes because they will help you with work and could also possibly become out of class friends.

Making friends in your classes is something you will for sure not regret. They’ll help you out with in-class and out of class work, help you study, and just be a good time in class instead of sitting all alone the whole time. And if they’re like some of the people I met, you’ll have someone to grab a bagel after class with or even go out with.

Dear High School Friend Group,

My sweet angels, where would I be without you guys. We all grew up together because we either met in middle school or high school and watched each other grow up and get "old." We got to go to prom together and then graduate together. Then watched each other as we continued our lives in college, joining sororities and meeting people who will impact our lives forever. It all has happened so fast.

Oh college, we can’t live with you, but we can’t live without you. It’s a love/hate relationship, really. College is an experience that no one can ever prepare you for, and maybe that’s a good thing. You never really expect any of the things that college encompasses until you are there. College is fun, but don’t have too much fun. C’s get degrees, but they don’t get you into graduate school.

Blair Waldorf

The "Gossip Girl" series may be over, but Blair Waldorf's iconic character lives in our hearts forever. Blair was the queen of the Upper East Side, and a character you either loved or hated. She taught us everything we needed to know about life, love and of course, how to score a Chuck Bass. So the next time you feel a bit lost and are in need of guidance, look no further than to the Queen B herself.

As I spend my Sunday avoiding my homework and other adult responsibilities, I realized that I've watched this series over and over about a million times. Sadly, there isn't a Blair quote I don't know, so I came up with a list of a few favorites. You know you love her...xoxo

Summer: a time (usually) free from school work and a time to relax with your friends and family. Maybe you go on a vacation or maybe you work all summer, but the time off really does help. When you're in college you become super close with so many people it's hard to think that you won't see many of them for three months. But, then you get that text saying, "Hey, clear your schedule next weekend, I'm coming up" and you begin to flip out. Here are the emotions you go through as your best friend makes her trip to your house.
