11 Things I learned in My First Month of College

There's so much I didn't know

11 Things I learned in My First Month of College

Here we are coming up on week 6 of the semester, and for me at least, it's been the beginning of my very first semester of college. In that time, I've learned a whole heck of a lot of things I didn't even know I would need to know, and a lot of things I thought I had figured out that I really actually didn't.

1. Frats are gross

They stink. The beer is bad but the wine is worse. Somehow you manage to have fun, and you know you’ll be back out on Greek Row tomorrow.

2. The library is a wonderful place

It’s a quiet, judgment free zone just to handle your business. And it’s amazing, especially when the football players are having practice right below you. That makes the hours go faster.

3. Good friends are important

You have to find the ones who will stay in and watch movies with you but also go out and get wild when you want to. Not everyone is that nice so you have to have your girls to look out for you 24/7.

4. College horror stories do actually happen

You never think it’ll be you. Maybe it won’t be, but it might be your roommate or the girl in your political science class. It happens, often right under our noses (also why good friends are important). For me, it’s one of those things I thought could never happen on my campus, but sure enough, I was wrong.

5. Class before 10 am is not a good idea

It doesn’t sound like the crack of dawn, but it is. I know I’ll never make the mistake of an early class ever again because it takes every ounce of will in me to get out of bed and at the very least brush my teeth.

6. Your roommate will be your friend even if you never intended to be friends

Just the fact that this person sees you first thing in the morning fresh out of bed, or getting sick, or when you’re so stressed over school you’re about to cry. And they have to accept you because you live 4 feet away from them, so how could you not at least sort of be friends?

7. Communal living kind of sucks

Shower shoes. Laundry sign ups. Having to wait for just the right time to poop when no one is around. The bumping music and the stomping from the crazy boys upstairs. It’s all a big mess of kids trying to pretend they’re not kids anymore.

8. Being away from home is actually really hard

I never thought I’d be the one to get homesick, but there’re days where all I want is a hug from my mom, to take my dog for a walk, and to eat the pantry full of food that I didn’t need to swipe a card to have access to.

9. Getting mail is 10x more exciting here than at home

It’s the best email I’ve ever received. It’s just so nice to know that someone cared enough to send you love in a box, especially if that love comes in the form of food. I’ve learned food is one of the best ways to show love to a college student.

10. RDA is a blessing

Like really, truly, I feel so #blessed when I swipe my card. It’s like monopoly money but it actually gets you real food and you don’t feel like you spent any money because your bank account stays at the same number.

11. I love Pullman

Pullman is actually the second happiest place on Earth, second only to Disneyland. Between the sunsets and the people and the spirit, especially on Game Day, there’s no place I’d rather be.

I think the hardest thing about going away to college is figuring out how to become an adult. Leaving a household where your parents took care of literally everything (thanks, Mom!) and suddenly becoming your own boss is overwhelming. I feel like I'm doing a pretty good job of being a grown-up, but once in awhile I do something that really makes me feel like I'm #adulting. Twenty-somethings know what I'm talking about.

I went to a small high school, like 120-people-in-my-graduating-class small. It definitely had some good and some bad, and if you also went to a small high school, I’m sure you’ll relate to the things that I went through.

1. If something happens, everyone knows about it

Who hooked up with whom at the party? Yeah, heard about that an hour after it happened. You failed a test? Sorry, saw on Twitter last period. Facebook fight or, God forbid, real fight? It was on half the class’ Snapchat story half an hour ago. No matter what you do, someone will know about it.

Chandler Bing

I'm assuming that we've all heard of the hit 90's TV series, Friends, right? Who hasn't? Admittedly, I had pretty low expectations when I first started binge watching the show on Netflix, but I quickly became addicted.

Without a doubt, Chandler Bing is the most relatable character, and there isn't an episode where I don't find myself thinking, Yup, Iam definitely the Chandler of my friend group.

Working with the public can be a job, in and of itself. Some people are just plain rude for no reason. But regardless of how your day is going, always having to be in the best of moods, or at least act like it... right?

1. When a customer wants to return a product, hands you the receipt, where is printed "ALL SALES ARE FINAL" in all caps.

2. Just because you might be having a bad day, and you're in a crappy mood, doesn't make it okay for you to yell at me or be rude to me. I'm a person with feelings, just like you.

3. People refusing to be put on hold when a customer is standing right in front of you. Oh, how I wish I could just hang up on you!

RBF, or resting b*tch face, is a serious condition that many people suffer from worldwide. Suffers are often bombarded with daily questions such as "Are you OK?" and "Why are you so mad?" If you have RBF, you've probably had numerous people tell you to "just smile!"
