11 Things Girls With Curly Hair Understand

Why can't I just have a good hair day?

As much as girls with straight hair say they understand, there are just some things that only curly-haired girls will get. Brushing your hair brings frizz, we all dread the triangle hair of doom and although sometimes we have great hair days (wow are those rare), most of the time we look like we got into a fight with a lion or something. It's an instant love-hate relationship with our crazy curls, but it's all worth it in the end (especially when we look like Beyoncé personally kissed our curls). So, here are 11 things that only curly haired girls understand.

1. Straightening your hair is a pain.

If you decide to straighten your hair, you need to be up at least two hours earlier than normal. And if you are showering it's even more time. In fact, straightening your hair is practically a full day thing. But as soon as you step outside, your hard work will all be ruined by Mother Nature. Typical.

2. You live in frizz city.

Summer is the worst. As soon as you step out of the house, all your perfect curls will turn into a a crazy mop on your head. Perfect hair? Yeah right, it's supposed to rain, not happening. Did you happen to touch it too much? Oh oops, frizz.

3. Tangles. Tangles everywhere.

Conditioner and detangling spray are always on hand. And we can't forget about the people that think they are helpful by saying, "Why don't you brush it?" To which your answer should be, "I did and I lost my brush, wallet, and family in my hair. Thanks for nothing."

4. "I like your hair better when it's straight"

Yeah, well I like you better when your mouth is shut and your rude comments (and rude self) are at least 50 feet away from me. Thank you!

5. Only parts of your hair are beautifully curly

You know what I'm talking about, unless you are blessed with Beyoncé-like curls (and I'm so jealous if you are) nobody has perfect curls. Part of it is straight or wavy while part of it looks like it came straight from Shirley Temple's head. Where is my beautiful happy medium?! Why does only the underside look flawless?!

6. You can never recreate your perfect curls from the day before

Because your hair has a mind of its own, products don't work all of a sudden and the weather is crazy. Waking up in the morning brings a whole new adventure —your hair is different every time. Good luck. Only a few hair masters can get their curls looking perfect every single time (please teach me how).

7. Your hair is drier than the Sahara

Curly hair tends to be dry, but I'm not talking "put in some conditioner, it'll be fine" kind of dry, I'm talking about the kind of dry hair that sucks up every single ounce of moisture and crackles in the sun. The kind of dry hair that takes half a bottle of conditioner to get decently soft.

8. Washing your hair is rare

Since curly hair is dry, washing it too often is really bad for it. Every time you decide to wash your hair, it's basically a holiday. You take time off, pamper yourself and your hair and enjoy that scalp rub. You go girl, you wash that hair.

9. How do people run their fingers through their hair so effortlessly?

Seriously, if I did that, I'd pull out a chunk of my hair. Oh yeah, and we shed a lot, too.

10. So. Many. Products.

Without product, your hair is not at prime curl level. I'm talking conditioners, creams, mousse, wax, gels and serums galore.

11. But at the end of the day, you wouldn't trade your curls for anything

You always hear, "I wish my hair was curly, mine is so boring." Well, you should just learn to embrace whatever you got, I'm sure it's beautiful.

Embrace the curl!

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs.
