Majoring in English in college is very typically frowned upon by parents, other family members, and even friends, with some feeling superior that their major is better than English. However, if paired well with another major or a minor, English isn't too shabby. Here's just a few of the things we hear all the time.
1. Oh, so you want to be a teacher.
No, at least not right now.
2. Or do you want to go into law?
Wrong-o.
3. So, if you're not teaching or going into law, what are you doing?
English majors can go into numerous career field such as writing, publishing, etc.
4. So, do you just read books all day?
Just... speechless.
5. Do you even want a job after college?
Is this... a real question?
6. I took an English class once... It was nice to have an easy class.
Congrats on taking an introduction class. Now try taking literary theory.
7. Will you look over my résumé/essay?
Sure, out of the kindness of my heart.
8. I like to write sometimes, too.
Congratulations, but majoring in English is so much more than just freely writing.
9. Sometimes hobbies don't make the best careers, honey.
Watch me as I become successful and then hit me up, honey.
10. That's so brave of you. I could never major in English.
Never say never. You just have to open your mind.
11. I wish I had an easy course load like you.
Let's switch for a day. I'll be happy to enlighten you.
