It’s that time of the year. College students are starting to get antsy as the end of the semster seems to drag on. The stress of finals coupled with the billions of assignments our professors have piled onto us makes us wish for home. We all are so sick of dining hall food and miss all of our friends and family. With just a little less than a month left here’s a list of things I miss the most about home.
1. Not having to wear shoes in the shower
This is probably one of the worst things about college. No one wants to take a shower while wearing shoes. It is annoying and is super foreign when you first start college. One of the best parts about going home is being able to step in the shower and not have to worry about the other people who used the shower before you.
2. Being able to drive
A lot of college students don't have a car with them on campus. Having a car is like having freedom. You can drive wherever you want and whenever you want (within reason of course). In college you're pretty much stuck on campus and where you can walk to unless you want to pay for an Uber. Of course, we are all poor, so that's not an option.
3. Being able to sing whenever you want
Honestly this is probably the thing I miss most of all. I sing all the time at home. In the car. In the shower. In the kitchen. In my room. Literally everywhere. In college there are always people around and a lot of time you don't know them. This makes you feel uncomfortable singing because they can hear you.
4. Having my own room
I love my roommate - don't get me wrong, but I love having my own room more. It's so nice not having to worry about being quiet or cleaning up. When you have your own room you don't have to be considerate. You can do whatever you want whenever you want. College is full of people, so having the opportunity to be alone is pretty great too.
5. Home cooked food
At this point in the semester we'd all die for some of our mom's food. We are so sick of the food from the dining hall and probably have had everything approximately 100 times. In high school it was exciting to go out, but now all we want is to eat whatever our mom decides to make.
6. Your friends from home
Facetiming, skyping, texting and calling is not even close to actually seeing your friends in real life. While we all love our new college friends, there is something about our friends from back home. They know all about us and were there through all the awkward stages.
7. Being able to flip channels
I don't know about everyone else, but I miss having a TV so badly. Netflix is just not cutting it for me. There is something magical about being able to just sit down and flip channels until you find something to watch. Plus having a DVR is a luxury I never knew I'd miss until it was gone.
8. Activities from high school
In college you just can't do as much as you did in high school. In high school you could play a sport (or three), be involved in theater, music, youth group and various other clubs maybe even fitting in some volunteer work. In college you have to pick just a couple of these things. While you can always join a new team or youth group there is something about the old group from home you just miss.
9. Special places you only have at home
Everyone has local places at home that they love. Whether it be Cedar Point, Portillo's, Christmas Tree Shops or the local diner, everyone has their place back home that they love. In college there is no way you can get there, but you can bet your bottom dollar that you will be hitting it up the moment you get home.
10. Reliable wifi
College wifi is the worst. One moment you are happily streaming Netflix on your phone and the next you realize you haven't been connected to university wifi since five minutes into the show. Our phones constantly log off the wifi making everything laggy and causing us to use up all of our data.
11. My family
This one is kind of a no brainer. And of course it includes our loving pets. As much as we fight with our families, we love them. They know how to make us smile. They know exactly how to get under our skin. And they are always there for us.
