12 Things To Do Over Break Besides Watch Netflix
Overdue Review

It seems that almost every person I ask, "What are you gonna do over winter break?" has the same resounding answer: Netflix. Yes, Netflix is awesome, and I am more than guilty falling victim to countless hours of binge watching a complete series in one to two days. But this year I made a promise to myself — well it's more of a challenge — to not spend most of my break watching Netflix. It's hard to think of anything better than laying in bed with your dog while you watch "One Tree Hill" for what seems like the 20th time, so here is a list of productive alternatives:

1. Learn How to Knit

You'll be so happy you did come next year's holiday season when you can create your own, personal gifts for everyone and not have to break the bank.

2. Learn How to Play an Instrument

A couple years ago, I dedicated my entire break to learning how to play the ukulele and boy am I so happy. It's a skill you can utilize whenever you're bored even long after break is over.

3. Pick Up Extra Hours at Work

Okay, so maybe this isn't the most exciting alternative, but you'll be thanking yourself when you look at your bank account before starting spring semester. Hey, maybe you can even save up for the ultimate Spring Break trip.

4. Re-read Harry Potter

Maybe you're a major Potterhead like myself and want to relive the story through adult eyes or maybe you never read them to begin with. Either way, you won't regret it. And lord knows that it'll take up a good portion of your break. (There's a reason it's one of the most popular books series of our time.)

5. Read Any Book Series

Okay, so maybe the world of magic isn't for you. That's cool. But don't let that be an excuse not to get wrapped up in a book series, whether it's new or your favorite series from your childhood.

6. Read Any Book

Okay. So you didn't read much as a child and don't have time for a lengthy series. But pick up a damn book, ANY book, and put your literary skills to use.

7. Connect With Old Friends

I'm sure you've missed your best friend and your OG posse from home, but take the time to reconnect with that person that drifted away once you entered college. Yeah it's been a while, but there was a reason you two connected in the first place.

8. Eat as Many Home Cooked Meals as Possible

It's only a matter of time before you have to go back to dining hall food and ramen, so don't snack all day watching "Gilmore Girls" and skip family meals. Take advantage of your Mom or Dad's cooking while you can!

9. Visit Your Grandparents

Time is constantly passing and you're getting busier every year. Make some time for more than just your Mom or Dad. I'm sure it'll mean the world to your grandparents just to talk with you over lunch for a few hours.

10. Prep For Life After Graduation

If you're a senior, next semester is also your last. So, instead of waiting until the last minute as you constantly have the past four years, prepare for your future. Look for jobs, finish applying to grad school, or look for apartments.

11. Volunteer

Use that week you could re-watch OITNB to help out at a food pantry, animal shelter, or a local boys and girls club.

12. Travel

You won't be a college student forever. Take what little freedom you have left to visit the destinations you've always dreamed of. You'll only grow to regret it when your full-time job takes over in a few years.

The 5 Painfully True Stages Of Camping Out At The Library

For those long nights that turn into mornings when the struggle is real.

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.

28 Daily Thoughts of College Students

"I want to thank Google, Wikipedia, and whoever else invented copy and paste. Thank you."

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate
Mental Floss

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."
