11 Things That Annoy Everyone In Class

Don't be that guy.

11 Things That Annoy Everyone In Class

Everyone has pet peeves when it comes to what other students or teachers do in class. If you're really unfortunate, a teacher or student will commit to doing this throughout the semester and might make you loathe the class. Over the years I have come to realize what some of my biggest annoyances are when it comes to the classroom, and I'm sure other people have experienced some of these as well.

1. When students bring smelly food to class,

This is just mean. We're all trapped in this classroom together, and there's nowhere for the smell to go, please just eat it before the class or in the hall.

2. When someone pushes down on their mechanical pencil and it makes the awful squeaking sound.

Why don't I just run my fingers down a chalk board while we're at it?

3. When the professor holds you after lecture to take attendance.

And always seem to drag it out.

4. When a professor cancels class, but you don't find out until after you walk all the way there.

You don't need to leave a note on the door, we have email for a reason.

5. When you get paired with people in group projects that bring literally nothing to the table.

I guess I'll be doing all the work, yet again.

6. When the person next to you always asks to borrow something.

I didn't buy these pens and this notebook for you to take from me every class. Figure it out.

7. Having class on Fridays after 2 p.m.

Or at all, for that matter. Can this just not be a thing?

8. When other students have a private conversation during the whole class when you're actually trying to pay attention.

Dirty looks never work, and the prof always seems to never notice or just not care. Ugh.

9. When profs announce that they don't allow laptops in class.

No.

10. Having a know-it-all in your class.

Please put your hand down, or better yet, stop interrupting the professor. You're taking this class for a reason; you don't know everything.

11. When someone decides to switch their seat halfway through the semester.

Seriously, WHY do people do this? You pick your seat by the third class and you commit to that for the whole semester. You're throwing the whole classroom dynamic off when you decide to switch. I feel like someone always takes my seat on exam day. Just please stick to your seat, please.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs.
