11 Struggles That Perfectly Sum Up Summertime In Houston

I love Houston so much it burns.

Summertime is quickly approaching and that means no school and fewer responsibilities. Summer is such a great season, the only thing that makes summer unbearable is the heat -- especially when you live in Houston. Oh, H-Town … why do you have to be so cruel? Don’t get me wrong, I love my city. I’m just not the biggest fan of 100 percent humidity and 100+ degree weather and not being able to breathe when I’m outside. It gets so bad that the city advises its residents to keep all pets inside and well hydrated. Houston summers are out to get everyone and it has no mercy.

So, for those who aren’t lucky enough to live in Houston, I’m here to give you a taste of how our summers usually go. Who knows? Maybe you like it and want to move here! And for all of my Houstonians, here is a reminder of what’s to come.

1. Everyone on the first day of summer: “Wow! I love summer, let’s take advantage of the sun and tan!”

Houston weather: “Ha-ha-ha. Think again.”

2. Trying to get from the door (of any building) to the car without sweating…

Summer: 1

Humans: 0

3. Your hair being victimized by the humidity…

(Cries inside.)

4. Not wanting to leave the place where you are at because you’ve come to the conclusion that the outside isn’t safe with so much heat.

5. Being motivated to go for a run but...

No air, air.

6. Spending all of your money on cold drinks and cold treats.

7. Thinking that those who drink coffee or soup during the hottest days of the year lost their mind.

8. Feeling hopeless when the meteorologist announces that there will be rain in the forecast because you know rain only makes everything more humid and a lot hotter.

9. Taking more than two showers per day because you would rather pay more for the water bill than to be gross and sweaty.

10. Halfway through the summer wanting to move out of Houston because you actually want to live to see other seasons.

11. But telling yourself, after much deliberation, that you wouldn’t change your city for the world.

(Because that means giving up J.J. and you wouldn’t want to do that.)

This list is probably not even close to what we all have to endure everyday for about three to four months (if not more) but it at least gives you somewhat of an idea of what is like. Being in Houston in the summer can make you borderline crazy and yes we will complain … a lot! Complaining about the Houston weather during the summer is probably one of the city’s favorite pastimes. You would think we are all very used to the how bad the weather gets but every year there’s a new surprise.

It’s like being in a long-term relationship with someone that doesn’t stop surprising you, no matter how long you’re with them. But this relationship is more of a love/hate kind of situation. We never know what we’re going to get but I don’t think we would have it any other way.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
