11 Steps to the Beginning of Summer Break

The end of the semester is hectic. Professors assign loads of homework and you have a ton of papers to finish on top of getting ready for finals. You have a list a mile long of things you need to do before the semester is over. Then you finally get there. The semester is over and it’s time to get ready to begin the summer. Every year you go through the same process...

1. Finals week.

You may also know this week as the worst week of the semester. It’s full of last minute papers, test, studying and those last few times you can hang out with your friends. That last day when people are leaving is the hardest.

2. Packing.

This is the easiest and the hardest part of finals week. Not only do you have to finish all those assignments and the like; you have to pack up your entire life and somehow make it fit into one car. If you’re lucky, you get some help from Mom.

3. Saying goodbye.

Before anyone leaves, you and all your friends say goodbye for the summer. That may be the actual hardest part. You won’t see each other for a few months, and it’s going to be weird not being able to hear your roommate’s random sounds. You find that those bird sounds she makes when she’s tired have grown on you, and you don’t know how to handle a night without them.

4. Travel.

You make sure your car is packed up with everything in the world that you own and realize just how small your life is. Then you leave your home-away-from-home and start driving towards your actual-home. You have this elaborate plan to hang out with friends once you get back home. Of course, you have to unpack everything first…

5. Unpacking.

Time to move your entire life back into your house. As you’re moving everything back, you realize just how much stuff you have and decide to finish moving it all until tomorrow.

6. Say hello to the family pet.

The cat may hold a grudge against you for being gone for so long, but he’ll forgive you once he realizes you’re here for the summer. He’s avoiding you, but you know it’s just a matter of time.

7. Sleep.

All those plans you had? Yeah, forget them. After two to three weeks of late night studying, you crash. You don’t have any time to hang out with friends until you finally can sleep for a good 10 hours.

8. Unpack some more.

You finally get the rest of your stuff in the house. Then, of course, you have to find a place for it all. That’s the fun part…

9. Say hello to the family pet – again.

This time the cat is actually willing to let you hold him. He may be mad that you left again, but he’s so excited you’re home. He actually knows you're home because all your stuff is back. He even finds a new favorite spot on your chair…

10. Sleep.

You can never get enough sleep when recuperating from the end of the semester. Try as you might, you’re still exhausted. It’s been a long semester and you are still severely lacking sleep.

11. Relax.

All you can do now is relax. Take some time to breathe because you finally can. All your stuff is moved back. No more classes for a few months. You have so many fewer things to think about, you can actually find time to read for fun. Enjoy it.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
