You never realize how small your town really is until you go off to some place much bigger where you need to introduce yourself and they don't even known how to pronounce the name of your hometown or if it really even truly exists. Believe it or not there are actually towns with malls and stuff and fancy restaurants where dressing up is required. Truth be told, when I went off to college, I was exposed to a whole new world of foods, stores, and culture that I never knew existed in a lot of other towns. It really surprised me how surprised some people were that I had never been to a Dunkin Donuts before. Thus, inspiring me to think about how small my town really is when compared to the rest of the world. Here's a 11 signs that you're probably from a small town too and a heads up that you will most likely get a few weird looks in the coming years.
1. You have gone to Walmart just for the fun of going to Walmart on more than one occasion.
If you tend to go to Walmart to have fun on more than one occasion then you're definitely from a small town. It also goes to say that you probably go into Walmart once or twice for the same thing and always end up leaving with something else.
2. All of the schools close for the opening day of deer hunting season.
In my town, we are known for the amount of deer we have during deer season it only seems reasonable to close the schools down for the day since there will probably only be about four kids in attendance.
3. Everybody, I mean everybody, posts a picture of the sunset.
A pretty sky doesn't happen to often around here and when it does, it's a big deal. It's pretty cool seeing the sunset all over social media even after the sun is gone.
4. Everybody knows your name.
You could have never met someone in your life, but somehow they will always end up knowing your name before you even can begin to ask for theirs. They probably will even think they know your whole life story too and really are just going off of what they heard somewhere.
5. If somebody passes away, everybody is affected.
You may not have known the person, but when death hits the town, we all come together and support one another through it. We look out for one another and that's the beauty of such a small place. Sometimes we may look the other way when someone is coming but when we need each other we are always there.
6. You use landmarks of the town to give directions instead of actual street names.
"Left at the hair salon, past the McDonalds, it's the white one on the road with the bent looking tree."
7. Movies, Bowling, Walmart.
In a small town, there's only so much you can do to have fun. In my town, this is literally all we got. You do what you gotta do sometimes.
8. Dating kids from other schools was cool.
Who wouldn't want to be the one at the dance with the cool date from a different school? What gets people talking is the mysterious date at the prom that nobody saw coming.
9. When people ask where you're from, you tell them the largest closest city you can think of.
"It's pretty small, have you ever heard of it?"
"No, never, what's it by?"
"Columbus."
"Oh, yeah I have heard of that... I think."
10. You have to take at least a 20 minute drive to get anywhere nice for dinner.
All the time my family is going out of town because we want a nicer dinner than Taco Bell and Little Ceasers. Any town that is bigger than mine is always gauged by how many restaurants and stores it has.
11. No matter how small, it will always be home.
Yes, there isn't much. Being home in a small town is always nice after a long day in the big world. No matter what we will always be proud of where we come from, because it's always been home.
