Your home is across the Blue Ridge Mountains.

11 Signs You're From Western North Carolina

1. Fall is one of your favorite seasons.

Actually, all seasons are your favorite season. The mountains have a way of making every season beautiful, especially autumn. Fall anywhere else just doesn't compare to the crisp cool air and the mountains covered in reds and oranges.

2. You consider eastern style barbecue a disgrace.

Vinegar is not a sauce.

3. Asheville is considered a big city.

WNC has so many small towns, each with their own charm. However, you oftentimes have to go to Asheville to buy certain things that are not offered in your small town. Driving 30 minutes to the mall is normal.

4. People who aren't from WNC ask if Boone and Asheville are the same place.

You then proceed to show them a map.

5. When you tell people where you're from, they list off names of people that are from the mountains.

Their friend lives in Yancey County and since you live in Macon, you must know them. In all fairness to their friend they probably just tell people that they are from Asheville because no one has heard of the town almost two 2 hours away.

6. You love to drive on the parkway.

The Blue Ridge Parkway is a great way to go into town with a view. Nearly every turn takes your breath away, and you never get tired of it.

7. You had Chacos before they were cool.

This might justify the stereotype that people from the mountains are hipsters, but whatever. Chacos are, and always have been, your go-to shoe.

8. People ask you if you have been to the Biltmore Estate and Tupelo Honey.

Only everyone who has made it through the fifth grade has been to the Biltmore House. You might have even had your prom on the Estate. Now that Tupelo Honey is a chain, you are a little bit proud to have grown up going to the original, however it annoys you that Tupelo is the only awesome independent restaurant anyone seems to ask you about.

9. You had to buy a cell signal booster for your house.

Without it you'd probably have to send telegrams to your friends.

10. You've been to more festivals and farmers' markets than you can count.

Given, your parents probably dragged you to most of them, but now that you're older you actually kind of enjoy going.

11. You're proud of where you're from.

Even though your life may have taken you away from your mountains, you love that people think you are cool just because of where you grew up. It's genuinely flattering when people have an interest in your hometown, whether they know where it is or not.

The transition into adulthood is never easy

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs.
