It's probably the most important dance of your life: your first dance with your new spouse at your wedding. All eyes will be on you as you twirl around the floor, and all ears will inevitably be listening to whatever song you've chosen for your debut as a married couple. It goes without saying that there's more than a little pressure to pick the perfect tune; the song you choose will represent your relationship forever.
After thinking a lot about what song we wanted to use for our first dance, my fiancé and I have finally made up our minds. While I won't be revealing that choice until my wedding day arrives, there are a lot of other fantastic songs that I considered using and will share now.
1. "L-O-V-E" - Nat King Cole
It's timeless. It's upbeat. It's the first thing that comes to mind when I think about the Lindsay Lohan version of "The Parent Trap". I have always been a Nat King Cole fan and this song was definitely one of my top contenders for my first dance. I hope you l-o-v-e it as much as I do.
2. "Thinking Out Loud" - Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran is one of my favorite musicians of all time, second only to Taylor Swift in my book. He has written a lot of gorgeous love songs, and "Thinking Out Loud" is one of my favorites. So why have I decided not to use this song for my first dance? Mostly because so many other couples already have.
3. "Just A Kiss" - Lady Antebellum
I used to fall asleep listening to this song and thinking about my now-fiancé back when we first started dating. I think it perfectly describes the early stages of every great relationship...but it isn't quite as perfect for the later stages (like when you're getting married).
4. "Lucky" - Jason Mraz & Colbie Caillat
I'm of the opinion that the best romantic relationships always start out as friendships. That's exactly what happened for me, and I know I am definitely "lucky I'm in love with my best friend". That's why I love this song so much...but it still ultimately got beaten out by a song I love even more.
5. "God Gave Me You" - Blake Shelton
I feel like God sent me my fiancé every single day, and this uplifting song by Blake Shelton speaks to that feeling. But I'll be honest— now that Blake Shelton and Miranda Lambert are divorced, this tune seems like a bit of a bad omen (especially after watching the beginning and end of the music video).
6. "The Way You Look Tonight" - Frank Sinatra
I definitely have a soft spot for older love songs. They always seem to get right to the heart of romance, summing up my feelings much better than most modern love songs. "The Way You Look Tonight" doesn't disappoint.
7. "Aspyn's Song" - Alex Aiono
This song was written specifically for Aspyn Ovard and Parker Ferris, and they used it at their wedding. While I couldn't ever bring myself to use it at my own for that reason, I still think it's one of the most romantic songs in the world.
8. "Mary's Song" - Taylor Swift
Hailing from Taylor Swift's very first album, "Mary's Song" is definitely one of her less popular tunes. However, as someone who met her fiancé back when we were kids, this song has always resonated with me. I think it's a really sweet song, but in the end, not quite right for my first dance.
9. "Tie It Up" - Kelly Clarkson
I've been a Kelly Clarkson fan from the minute I first heard her sing when I was 4-years-old and she was competing in the first season of American Idol. "Tie It Up" is such a fun song, and I definitely thought about using it for my first dance.
10. "Honeybee" - Blake Shelton
I've always thought "Honeybee" was a cute song, especially since my fiancé is a classic Southern guy. Unfortunately, this is yet another Blake Shelton song I'm too superstitious to use.
11. "That's Amore" - Dean Martin
This song definitely would have been a bit unconventional for a wedding, but there's a story behind it. My fiancé and I had been dating for just over three months when our first New Year's Eve together rolled around. And what were we doing when the clock struck midnight? Dancing around in my kitchen with cookies baking in the oven while "That's Amore" was playing.
I love all of the songs on this list, and while I'm probably going to play all of them at some point during my wedding, they were each taken out of the running for my first dance song. Stayed tuned to find out what song we ended up choosing!
