11 Reasons Why You Should Watch "Stranger Things"
Stranger Things

On July 15, 2016, Netflix released the first season of a new original series called Stranger Things. Within days this show seemed to instantly have everyone talking about it. Figuring I would see what all of the buzz was about, I decided to watch the first episode noncommittally.

There was no going back.

Like many other fans I was immediately hooked, and before long I had finished the first season and was left eagerly (and impatiently) awaiting the next one. What better way to spend my time waiting than by convincing other people to watch Stranger Things as well?

There are countless reasons why you should watch Stranger Things, but here are eleven to get you started:

1. The authentic 1980s setting.

Stranger Things is set in a small town in Indiana in the year 1983. Though this may seem like an extremely specific (and seemingly random) time and place, it really contributes to the overall atmosphere of the show. From music and cars to hairstyles and old technology, this show always maintains its classic eighties vibe.

2. A little something for everyone.

Do you like murder mysteries? Science fiction? Paranormal tales? Action-packed adventures? Romance? Even touching coming-of-age stories? If you said yes to any of these, then Stranger Things is the show for you.

3. It celebrates our inner nerd.

Mike and his friends are not exactly what you would call popular. Though they are incessantly bullied by their peers, they nevertheless continue to play their games and hurl Lord of the Rings trivia at each other. They stay true to their geeky selves, which is something to be celebrated.

4. It’s short and sweet.

Sometimes it can feel impossible to catch up with a TV show that has ten seasons and over a hundred episodes. Fortunately, catching up with Stranger Things is a piece of cake. With only one season of just eight episodes to watch, you’ll have plenty of time to spare before the next season comes out.

5. It is incredibly suspenseful.

Between shocking plot twists and crazy cliffhangers, you won’t be able to look away from the screen for a single moment. It’s engrossing, captivating, and is sure to keep you on your toes. What more could you want?

6. People of all ages can relate with the characters.

One unique aspect of this show is that it stars characters of all different ages. From middle school age Mike and his high school age sister to Will’s mom and all of the adults involved in the investigation, there’s bound to be a character with whom you feel a connection no matter your age.

7. Eggo waffles are a recurring element.

You know you love the, and now you have an excuse to eat those frozen breakfast treats once more. Thanks, Eleven!

8. Family and friendships are important, too.

Far too often movies and TV shows prioritize romantic relationships over those of family and friends. While romance certainly plays a role in Stranger Things, family dynamics and bonus between friends are just as crucial to the story. The friendship between Mike and his friends is one of my favorite aspects of this show— I just know they’ll be best friends for life!

9. It’s perfect for the Halloween season.

Spooky? Creepy? Chilling? Spine-tingling and hair-raising? Check, check, check, and double check! Complete with monsters, mystery, and plenty of scary adventures in the dark, Stranger Things is a great addition to any Halloween To-Watch list.

10. You WILL be hooked.

Once you start watching this show, you can rest assured that you’ll immediately be hooked. Not only will you become deeply invested in the characters, but the suspenseful plot will keep you constantly thinking about Stranger Things until you finish the very last episode.

11. Eleven.

How could I not highlight Eleven as my eleventh reason for why you should watch this show? Her character is complex, mysterious, loyal, courageous, and willing to do anything to help her friends. I can’t wait to see how her personality grows and develops in future episodes— so long as her love for Eggo waffles remains the same!

What’s that? I haven’t convinced you yet? Let’s make a deal: go watch the first five minutes of the first episode and I guarantee that you’ll be hooked. You’ll gain a new favorite show and I’ll gain another person with whom I can enthusiastically discuss Stranger Things. It’s a win-win situation all around!

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

Thanksgiving break is over and Christmas is just around the corner and that means, for most college students, one hellish thing — finals week. It's the one time of year in which the library becomes over populated and mental breakdowns are most frequent. There is no way to avoid it or a cure for the pain that it brings. All we can do is hunker down with our books, order some Dominos, and pray that it will all be over soon. Luckily, we are not alone in this suffering. To prove it, here are just a few of the many deranged thoughts that go through a college student's mind during finals week.

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.
