Brenau is my home.

11 Reasons Why I Love My College

Brenau is home.

The journey to find the right college was a trying one. I started out my sophomore year of high school with a list of eleven colleges all over the southeast. Over the next two years, I would cut that list in half, then down again to the final five that I would eventually apply to. I never actually visited any of the colleges on the list except for one. Brenau University hosted an event called Winter Weekend. I was welcomed from the moment that I stepped on campus, and I knew from that day forward that I had found my next home. There was no need to see any more colleges because I had found what I was looking for. Here are just a few reasons why I love Brenau University.

1. Brenau is Beautiful

On Brenau’s campus there is beauty everywhere. From the front lawn to the bamboo forest Brenau exemplifies beauty. But Brenau’s beauty goes beyond it’s campus. Brenau exemplifies beauty in all of the people that call Brenau home. Brenau shows each individual that they are beautiful in their own way. That is the most important kind of beauty that Brenau provides.

2. Brenau is tradition rich.

Countless traditions can be found all over campus. From the crow’s nest to the fountain and back around to the friendship pole Brenau’s traditions can be seen everywhere. And as a Brenau Woman we uphold traditions as a sacred right of passage that only a Brenau woman can truly understand.

3. Brenau cares.

At most colleges professors see only numbers. They have seven classes a week of two hundred students each. But at Brenau it is different. The small class sizes of fifteen to twenty students enable professors to truly care about their students. At Brenau, professors see a face, a name, and a whole person; not just a number.

4. Brenau wants you to succeed.

Brenau goes beyond professors caring. At Brenau, everyone cares. As a student here I have countless mothers to be quite honest. Our faculty and staff do everything they can to see us succeed and provide us with exactly what we need to do our best, inside the classroom and outside of it.

5. Brenau becomes your family.

As I said before as a student at Brenau I have countless mothers. I can say this because the people at Brenau become your family. And not just the adults. The students do as well. Even if you don’t join a sorority, any student can find family here at Brenau. As an athlete here my team is my family. As a student, my classmates are my family too, and as a resident here my hall-mates and my RA are my go-to people if I ever need anything.

6. Brenau shows you who you are capable of becoming.

Before I came to Brenau I was just another student in high school. Sure I was successful, I got good grades and lead a few clubs, but I wasn’t anything special. But when I came to Brenau, I was shown that I can be special. That I am unique. I am not just another number or another ordinary student. I can become completely and totally my truest self here and no one will judge me. They will instead lift me up and make me feel good about myself. They will encourage me to continue being me and only me.

7. Brenau gives you your best chance.

Brenau is the place to go if you need a second chance. Or maybe you never took the first one and you want to know where to start. Every student that comes here has a dream. I know I did. And at Brenau every student is given their best chance. The opportunity to be the best you that you can be.

8. Brenau has animals.

On a sort of relaxed note. Brenau has pet therapy every semester. And it’s awesome! We have animals and that is super cool. Especially when you are super stressed out about whatever final you are about to take, or that paper you have yet to start writing but it's due that day. Brenau has animals to cheer you up.

9. Brenau students come from all over.

At Brenau, we have students from everywhere. Not just the southeast, or the country. We have students that come from all over the world. But where we come from doesn’t matter once we are here. Because once you step onto the campus we are all one body of students, and we are a family. We put aside our differences and reach toward one common goal.

10. Brenau teaches you to be Gold Refined by Fire.

That goal is to become Gold Refined by Fire. Literally, the definition of Brenau becomes all of its students as we journey through our time here. Students at Brenau do not just obtain a degree by the time they leave here. We leave with something greater than a degree, we leave with a new outlook on life. a way of looking at the future as a chance, and a journey. We leave with connections that we will have for life, and we leave most importantly with the knowledge that we have become Gold Refined by Fire.

11. Brenau will always leave the light on for you.

No matter how long you leave this place Brenau will always welcome you back with open arms. Whether you have left for a weekend or you graduated and you come back for an alumni luncheon Brenau will always welcome back those that call it home.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
