While definitely not the most well-paid profession out there, teaching is something that I have wanted to do since I was a little girl in my living room with my stuffed animals in neat rows and a white board in front of the television. While back then being a teacher may have excited me because I got to have a bowl of candy on my desk and boss people around, my love for teaching has evolved into a true passion for teaching.
I've often been asked by my peers "why would you want to teach?" or "isn't there something you're good at?" So, in response, here are just a couple reasons why being a teacher is my dream job and not a last resort.
1. The lightbulb moments
There is nothing better in the world than watching a child’s face light up when they accomplish a task. It’s almost as good as knowing you helped them get to that point.
2. The lasting impact
Being a part of their story, no matter how big or small, can change a child’s life.
3. Being able to thrive in a creative environment
I’ve always been more of a creative thinker in and out of my academics, so being able to decide, to some extent, how to do my work is something that makes me excited to pursue this career track.
4. Every day is a new adventure
Unlike your average desk job, every day is another opportunity to make a difference and do so in a new, fun way.
5. The school environment is a community that changes every year
That same batch of 20-some kids replaces itself each year, providing the opportunity to work with a new set of young minds.
6. Work with more children than adults
Personally, I get along better with kids than I do with people my own age. So having the opportunity to work with some seven-year-olds instead of some too-serious adults is a huge plus.
7. Teacher appreciation gifts
Everybody loves free stuff! Especially when you’re an underpaid educator!
8. Growing demand for teachers
It’s not difficult to find a school that needs more teachers, so there’s not a huge concern coming out of college and looking for a job.
9. Flexibility on where to live
Tying into that, because of this growing demand, I can virtually pick and choose where I want to live without worrying about the job availability in the area.
10. Job security
With tenure and teacher unions, it’s difficult to try and cut teachers without a crime or malpractice having been committed.
11. Getting to watch 20-some kids grow over the course of the year
From the beginning of the year to the end, observing the mental and social growth in a set of students you’ve watched over and knowing that you helped them get to that place is the most rewarding part of all.
