11 Reasons NC State Is Calling Me Home

Guys, college is pretty amazing. Whether you're an incoming freshman filled with that half-excited, half-nervous feeling that comes from a serious change or a senior veteran who knows the ins and out of campus like the back of their hand, coming back to your second home is always a great day. Here are 11 reasons why I can't wait to be back at NC State:

1. Move-in

Cramming everything I own into a tiny dorm room may not be easy, but it's home for the next few months. It's called cozy, right?

2. Seeing campus landmarks

From Talley Student Center to the Bell Tower to my least favorite dining hall, being back on campus and seeing that familiar red brick everywhere is the most comforting feeling in the world.

3. Reuniting with friends

College is the only thing that can make summertime suck. With friends scattered across the state and country, being back together with your favorite people all in one place is a happiness like no other.

5. The start of classes

Okay so school sucks and is stressful and all that, but where else are you going to be intellectually challenged and learn things you actually care about? We are technically here to get an education, after all...

6. Getting to know Raleigh

Every year, my goal is to explore more and more of this gorgeous city we call home (because yes, there's a whole lot more to downtown than the Thursday night bar).

7. Back to school festivities

From Packapalooza to the first time eating at your favorite Raleigh restaurant again, celebrating the start of the year as cheesy as possible is always a great time.

8. And the start of football season

Because I may be biased, but there's nothing more beautiful than the sunset over a red-and-white filled Carter Finley Stadium on game day.

9. Which includes, of course, NC State's treasured tailgates

There's no better pastime in the world than hanging out with friends outside of Carter-Finley and finding that emotional connection to "Wagon Wheel" that is part of being an NC State student.

10. Rush/Bid Day

Although the process can be hectic, the joy when at the end of the week you have a new group of people to call your brothers or sisters is indescribable.

11. Feeling like you're finally home.

NC State is, and always will be, our home. We learn here, we are challenged here, we find joy here, and we grow here. Knowing that we're back where we belong again is a feeling of true bliss, and it is the reason I'm proud, even when away, to say I am a part of the Wolfpack.

Our hearts ever hold you, NC State.

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?
