Hockey is a sport for all. Hockey is unlike any other sport. It has something that not all sports do. First of all, hockey is the best because it's played on ice while balancing on a blade that is about 2.9 mm thick. This sport is worldwide. It is played in 62 countries bring different cultures together through one sport. It is truly amazing that a game like hockey can do that.
1. The pace of the game is incredibly fast.
The pace of a hockey game is far different than any other sport. Hockey is an adrenaline rushing sport. Anything can happen at any moment. A team could score in the first ten seconds of a game or tie it up in the last ten seconds of a game. A hockey game isn't over until the final, obnoxious horn goes off.
2. The intensity keeps you on the edge of your seat.
There are very few words that can describe the intensity of a hockey game. Hockey is a nail-biting sport. One minute your team is down by three goals, but then out of nowhere, it's a tie game. The reviews. The noise. All of it.
3. Cellys beat any touchdown dance.
Cellys- aka goal celebrations. Cellys are beautiful. You feel the excitement. You can see a reaction unlike any other after that marvelous goal. Cellys also bring excitement to the crowd.
4. Fights bring life to the game and make the crowd roar.
Fights bring another level of intensity. When those gloves drop, you know it's going to be good. The punches to the face, the blood, teeth being knocked out. All of it is incredible. Fights are one of the reasons hockey a great sport.
5. The fans will cheer for their team in any situation.
Hockey fans are unlike any other fans. They have an undeniable passion that flows throw the entire arena. They have their team's back. A penalty wasn't called? You better believe those fans are yelling as loud as possible.
6. Hockey traditions surpass all.
Hockey has numerous traditions. For instance, when a team wins the Stanley Cup, each of them gets to spend one day with The Cup. Another tradition is the tossing of hats onto the ice after a player completes a hat trick, which is three goals in one game. During the playoffs, beards are grown. The Winter Classic is the game of the year. It is played on New Year's day. Games that are played outside will always be better than games played in an arena.
7. All sports have superstitions, but...
Hockey players have some crazy superstitions. For instance, Sidney Crosby doesn't go by the visitors' locker room on game day. Some players will not touch the Clarence Campbell or the Prince of Wales trophies until the end of the Stanley Cup final. Some players have to put their equipment on in a certain order. Former NHL player, Luc Robitaille, had a superstition about how his sticks were taped. There are far more superstitions than just this.
8. Winter Classic is the game of the year
Every year, on New Years Day, the NHL has a game unlike any other. The Winter Classic. This game is only held once a year. The teams don't wear their regular sweaters for this game. They have ones specifically made.
9. The rivalries are the best.
Hockey is a sport that has some of the craziest rivalries. For instance, the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Philadelphia Flyers. The cross-state rivalry runs deep. This rivalry hasn't always been as serious as it is now. Another classic rivalry would be the Blackhawks and the Blues.The Oilers and the Flames are another intense rivalries that bring a load of heat to a game.
10. The Playoffs- 4 rounds, 16 wins.
The Stanley Cup Playoffs are unlike any other playoffs. Playoffs are another level of intense. It's incredible though. Watching your team fight for every game shows you how much they want The Cup. As a team gets closer and closer to holding that The Cup over their head, it gets even more intense.
11. The Cup: the freaking Stanley Cup.
The coveted Stanley Cup. The Cup has changed through the years, but it still holds history. Most sports have a new trophy every year. In hockey, if you want to keep that beautiful trophy, you have to work harder and harder every year. The Cup is an iconic part of hockey. Every little hockey player dreams of getting The Cup one day. When you do accomplish that dream, you are speechless.
Hockey has a lot of things to love. It is a sport for all ages. It is a sport that unites countries. It is a sport that has multiple languages. Most importantly, it is a sport that is played with passion like no other.
