Freehold is a town located in Monmouth County. From its acres of woods on the west side of town to the chaotic yet convenient shopping mall, it has had a place in my heart since I was born. I was born and raised in Freehold and there are so many reasons why I love this town. This is where I have made my best friends and some of the most important memories in my life.

This town is where I learned everything I know. This is where I went to school, summer camp, and spent my teenage years loitering around the Freehold Mall on a Friday night. From the summertime concerts in Freehold Boro to the annual Monmouth County Fair, there are many locations in this quaint town to make some stellar memories. I remember walking down the hallways of Freehold Boro High School hearing people say, "Where should we go get food in town after school?" and the morning announcements with our school principal's caring yet authoritative tone. My first date was here as well as many Christmases, Thanksgivings, and Super Bowl Sunday parties.

Different generations of people in this town remember all variations of different places and events based on what was popular when they were growing up. My mother always tells me about how when she was a child, the roads were mostly dirt. Children would go outside all day and not come home until dinner was on the table. The schools were smaller and the "732" area code did not even exist. If she wanted to see a friend, she would ride her bike across town to knock on their door because she did not have to worry about the chaotic, traffic loaded highway that is Route 9.

Being away at my university has taught me how much I love my town because when I am gone, I miss all of the little qualities that made up my childhood. When I come home for breaks, I am able to go to my favorite restaurants, parks, and see my favorite people. This list is just 11 of the many, many reasons why I love Freehold and why you do too.

1. The mall has almost every store you can think of.

2. You know it is about to rain when you smell coffee from the Nestle factory.

3. When you want a good sub, you head right to Sorrento's.

4. You can never decide to get sushi at Fusha or Oyako Tso.

5. Liberty Oak Park is the best place to go with your friends to take a long walk and talk about life.

6. Federici's has the best pizza and you'll never settle for lesser quality.

7. Rita's on a hot summer day is the best treat ever.

8. Bruce Springsteen grew up here and has a song about it.

9. We have one of the very few Chipotles in Monmouth County.

10. Freehold is an hour from Manhattan and an hour from Philadelphia.

11. Cafe 360 has the most amazing gelato in the state.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
