Stranger Things consumed viewers worldwide when this supernatural horror series was released on Netflix on July 15, 2016. The show follows the friends and family of Will Byers after he mysteriously disappears one night in Hawkins, Indiana. The police chief joins in the hunt to find the young boy, but when mysteries continue to present themselves in the pursuit to find Will Byers, the town is encapsulated in a conspiracy out of this dimension. If you're still iffy on whether you should watch this show or not, here's 11 reasons why you most definitely should.
Warning: this article contains minor spoilers.
1. The time period.
Much of the show's charm comes from the fact that it takes place in the 1980s, a time period that's captivating to a large portion of the audience that never got to witness the 80s' charm in person.
2. Winona Ryder.
Winona Ryder's performance in Stranger Things is true artistry. If for nothing else, you should watch for the emotion and genuineness that personify her acting.
3. The pacing of the show.
With only eight episodes, the show doesn't have time to drag. This means that the plot steadily progresses and you're left fully engulfed in the goings-on of these characters.
4. The mysteriousness that surrounds the show.
Hawkins, Indiana, is shrouded in mystery, and the writing of the show slowly but efficiently unravels the mysteries in a way that keeps you wanting more. However, that's not to say that every mystery is solved, because a season two is reportedly in the works.
5. The sheriff's daughter.
Speaking of mysteries that were left unsolved, one of the biggest is the fate of Chief Jim Hopper's daughter. Sarah died in flashbacks, but when asked if he knew what she actually died from, Hopper's actor David Harbour said, "Yes, but it's a secret we may explore in s2."
6. Eleven.
This waffle-loving girl is the star of the show when it comes to mystery and intrigue. She possesses telekinetic powers and seemingly doesn't have parents, but she quickly befriends Mike and his friends while being pursued by the U.S. Department of Energy.
7. The U.S. Department of Energy.
If you love conspiracy theories like I do, this show is for you. The government not only tested on Eleven, but also has been conducting experiments to try and safely navigate the Upside Down. And they'll do anything to keep their secrets, well, secret.
8. The demogorgon.
Based on the creature of the same name from the game Dungeons & Dragons, the demogorgon resides in the Upside Down and is supposedly attracted to blood. This creature opened up a discussion of dimensions on the show, and it landed itself beautifully to the lore of the Stranger Things universe.
9. Will's PTSD.
Something like this could have been easily glossed over, but I love that the writers included showing Will's PTSD after everything he's been through. It could definitely lead to a good character arc for him in season two since we didn't see much of him in season one due to him being taken.
10. Barb.
Oh, Barb. She's become a fan-favorite and for good reason. She was a loyal friend to Nancy, and she ultimately got taken by the demogorgon due to her loyalty. RIP, Barb, you are missed more than you know.
11. This rap made about the show.
Warning: there is a little bit of explicit language in this video.
Made in dedication to the fan-favorite Barb, this duo managed to capture the essence of the show perfectly in a two minute rap. If for no other reason, watch the show just so you can fully appreciate this video.
