"Dachshund: A half-a-dog high and a dog-and-a-half long."-H.L Mencken
1. They've had several famous owners.
The list of celebrities who have owned wiener dogs is a long one! Singers Adele, David Bowie and Fergie have all donned the dachshund. Artists Pablo Picasso and Andy Warhol were both inspired by their dachshunds to create several weenie-themed works. Actors and actresses seem to love sausage dogs, with stars Marilyn Monroe, Clint Eastwood, Kirsten Dunst, John Wayne and Elizabeth Taylor all associating as proud dachshunds owners. Dachshunds are so great even John F. Kennedy owned one!
While it's unclear if having a dachshund made these stars famous, it's safe to say owning a dachshund could contribute to your fame one day.
2. They're full of personality.
Dachshunds have the funniest personality in the dog world. Whether they're standing up to beg or stuck in the sleeve of your sweater with only their heads sticking out, they're sure to make you laugh!
3. They are fierce protectors.
These little guys were bred to hunt, and when it comes to their owners, this shows! They are fiercely protective of their owners. Usually, dachshunds form a special bond with one human, and when their special human is "under attack" (whether that be tickling or an actual attack), weenie dogs jump to the rescue, fighting off the aggressor!
4. They live long lives.
A dachshund's lifespan is 12-16 years, meaning they'll be with you for a long time! Elderly dachshunds are a joy, too. Their gray faces and vibrant personalities make them as lovable as they were when they were a pup.
5. There is a color and coat for everyone!
Dachshunds come in three varieties of coat textures: smooth-haired, long-haired, and wire-haired. While these textures require different levels of grooming, they are equal levels of cuteness! Dachshunds also come in several color combinations, with the most common being red, tan, black, dapple, fawn, and brindle.
6. They're small, but not a "lap-dog" or a "toy."
If you want a small dog but are deterred by the attitude of most small dogs, dachshunds are for you! They won't tolerate being carried in a purse or babied constantly because they were bred to hunt, but they are the perfect size to live indoors and cuddle in your lap (on their terms).
7. Owning a dachshund will make you more cultured.
If you want some culture in your life, a dachshund is a way to go! These lively dogs are from Germany and will make you a welcome guest at any Ocktoberfest festivals or bratwurst-eating contest. Not only that, dachshunds were a favorite pet of Queen Victoria (yet another famous owner)! Queen Victoria is credited with the saying “Nothing will turn a man’s home into a castle more quickly and effectively than a dachshund.”
8. They love to cuddle.
Just because they aren't lap dogs doesn't mean that they won't affectionate! Dachshunds love to burrow, especially under the warn blanket of their owner.
9. If an intruder is coming, they'll definitely bark.
These dogs are known for their bark, and for good cause! If they hear anything, they'll be sure to let you know...multiples times! While this may seem annoying to some, you'll be glad you have a dachshund if there ever is an unwanted visitor because you will definitely know about them beforehand.
10. They're addictive and you'll have to get more than one.
Once you get one dachshund, you'll have to get another! This is fine by them, though, as they prefer to live in pairs. Warning: you won't just get another dachshund, though, you'll find yourself buying wiener-dog themed everything! Pajamas, mugs, pictures, shoes...
11. They love with their entire hearts, and they'll give you as much affection as you give them.
As much as you'll love your dachshund, it will guaranteed love you more. It will wait for you at the door, it will constantly want to be around you, it follow you to the bathroom and the kitchen and outside. It will want kisses and it will give kisses. It will snuggle you when you cry. It will be your best friend and love you with it's entire heart, just as much as you love it.
