When it comes to shows, I usually stick with one for a few seasons before I move on to a new one. I've recently found a new Netflix original series to obsess over. It has everything I'd expect from the most British show since "Downton Abbey." Here are 11 reasons why you should be watching "The Crown" right now.
1. Historical accuracy
This show follows the reign of Queen Elizabeth II, so it has to keep things mostly true. If you're not into historical documentaries, have no fear, because this is a historical drama, which means there will be drama.
2. Costumes
The attention to detail is amazing. The historical accuracy of the fashion of that time is definitely present.
3. It’s not all about Elizabeth.
The show follows Winston Churchill, the Duke of Windsor, and even some of the events of King George VI's reign. You end up learning a lot about the other people in Elizabeth's life, which helps you understand her even more.
4. Character resemblance
They picked these actors for a reason, and it's not just because they're British (apart from John Lithgow, who plays Churchill).
5. Matt Smith!
"Doctor Who" fans will probably freak out seeing their precious 11th Doctor without his famous bow tie and fez, just standing there instead of flailing around. You really get an appreciation for Smith's acting skills by seeing him in such a different role.
6. Strong women
“I would ask you to consider your response in light of the respect my rank and my office deserve, not that which my age and gender might suggest.”
7. Nothing is sugarcoated
The show does a great job of showing how the strain of becoming sovereign affects Elizabeth's personal life. It's kind of like a less obnoxious, more classy version of "The Princess Diaries." It's a humble reminder that everyone makes mistakes, and there is always room for improvement.
8. The emotion
You know that King George IV will die, because that's how Elizabeth becomes Queen. However, even when you know it's coming, it still hits you hard. Then, when you see the look on Prince Philip's face when he realizes he has to tell his wife that her father died and she must now become Queen, it's hard not to shed a tear. The show does a great job of making the predictable events still fill you with emotions.
9. Winston’s advice
“If there is one thing I’ve learned in 52 years of public service, it is that there is no problem so complex nor crisis so grave that it can’t be satisfactory resolved in 20 minutes.”
10. Beautiful music
This is the only show where I won't skip the opening sequence, because the music is so pretty. The theme was written by my favorite composer, Hans Zimmer.
11. Queen Mary’s sass
"I'm always happy to see you, and my mood will improve if you promise me one thing."
"Name it."
"Not to ask me how I am. It's all anyone ever does. Forget death by lung disease; it's death by bad conversation."
