INFPs are so misunderstood. People like to characterize them as emotional and sensitive, and INFPs are, but they are so much more than that. In fact, INFPs are rarely the type of people to show emotion in public because of their introverted nature.
They live inside their head, and that's where a majority of their emotion resides. INFPs are the most idealistic of the 16 personalities and that's what makes them so special. If you don't know your Myers-Briggs Personality Type, you should take a quick quiz to find out if you are an INFP.
1. "Be Soft. Do not let the world make you hard. Do not let pain make you hate. Do not let the bitterness steal your sweetness. Take pride that even though the rest of the world may disagree, you still believe it to be a beautiful place." -Kurt Vonnegut
One of the defining characteristics of INFPs is their idealism. They look at the world differently than almost everyone else. However, when the world starts to disappoint them, it can be challenging for INFPs, and they need to work hard to stay true to who they are.
2. "Our inner light motivates us to keep going and inspire compassion and imagination in all who we meet." - Catherine Chea
INFPs are known for their imagination and compassion. In fact, you might recognize a few of these compassionate and creative INFPs: C.S. Lewis, Audrey Hepburn, Lisa Kudrow, J.R.R Tolkien, Princess Diana, and Andy Warhol. Fictional INFPS include: Daenerys Targaryen from "Game of Thrones," Scout from "To Kill a Mockingbird," Cosette from "Les Miserables," and Luna Lovegood from the "Harry Potter" series.
3. "Only the gentle are ever really strong." -James Dean
It takes a lot of strength to be kind even when you're upset.
4. "I let it go. It's like swimming against a current. It exhausts you." - Joanne Harris
Anger drains all the energy out of INFPs because it just goes against everything that they stand for. Sometimes it's easier to just let it go. That's also because INFPs absolutely hate confrontation.
5. "Don't ask yourself what the world needs. Ask yourself what you need, and then go do that. Because the world needs people who have come alive." - Dr. Howard Thurman
If an INFP is doing what they love, they are helping people. They are one in one with each other. If they are happy, they will exert a positive energy that they can use to help the world in one way or another.
6. "For what it's worth: it's never too late to be whoever you want to be. I hope you live a life you're proud of, and if you find you're not, I hope you have the strength to start over again." - F. Scott Fitzgerald
There is that idealistic optimism that's trademark of an INFP.
7. "Looking back, I have this to regret: that too often when I loved, I did not say so." - David Grayson
INFPs are very hard to get to know, but they will get to know you fairly quickly. They are typically the people that others go to vent or share their problems, but they will only open up to a select few. If an INFP trusts you, consider yourself very special.
8. "They who dream by day are cognizant of many things which escape those who dream by night." - Edgar Allan Poe
As an INFP myself, I can attest to the fact that INFPs are always in a daydream. I have very clear and not-so-fond memories of elementary school gym class where I got hit in the head with a volleyball and got a nosebleed because I was lost in my own thoughts. I can still here a boy on my team yell, "STOP DAYDREAMING!" It still makes me cringe.
9. "Nobody will stop you from creating. Do it tonight. Do it tomorrow. That is the way to make your soul grow, whether there is a market for it or not." - Kurt Vonnegut
INFPs love art. The art that they create varies from person to person. Some paint, some write, some dance, some draw... it's however INFPs choose to express themselves.
10. "And all the while I feel I'm standing in the middle of a crowded room, screaming at the top of my lungs, and no one even looks up." - Rose, "Titanic"
Because INFPs are so hard to get to know, they are often so misunderstood. They often feel like they don't fit in with everyone else.
11. "Life's too short to fight, to be miserable, to let the bitter ones change how awesome you are." - Peyton (One Tree Hill)
Once again, INFPs are altruistic and idealistic at their core. Life can beat them down, but they will always stand back up. When others get mean, they get kinder.
