By now, I'm sure you've learned that Fairfax, Virginia is not in the least bit a college town. However, we are situated in one of the most well-off places, not only in Virginia, but in the country. There are countless numbers of unique restaurants and stores that make up the city and are just waiting for you to show up. Whether you're in Old Towne or driving down Lee Highway, here are just a few places you have to go before you leave this beautiful town.
1. Woody's Ice Cream
If you're an ice cream connoisseur like myself, Woody's is the place to go. Located on the corner of North Street and 123, Woody's is the perfect spring and summer sweet shop whether you're with your friends, significant other, or your family. Decently priced and hand-made, make sure you cool off starting in March with soft serve, sundaes, and hand-dipped ice cream.
2. Sister's Thai
If you've never even had Thai food before, I recommend your first go at it be at Sister's. This humble abode of an eatery has all the classic American-Thai food as well as coffee and hand-made drinks. Located on University Dr., Sister's is only about a mile away from campus and offers a comfy, cozy place to dine in with your closest gals and pals. If you're wondering what to try first, I recommend the drunken noodle with chicken, it's sure to fill you up and ensure you with leftovers for tomorrow.
3. De Clieu
For all my coffee snobs and baked goods lovers, De Clieu is not only perfect for enjoying a hot cup of joe, but for breakfast, brunch, and lunch as well. Whether you're studying for an upcoming exam or grabbing coffee with that person you've had your eye on for a while, De Clieu is sure to set the scene. Be sure to try their Maker's Mark latte and they're Nutella and banana waffle next time you're in—don't worry, you'll thank me later. This sweet little coffee shop is happily located on the corner of University Drive and Main Street.
4. Fairfax Corner
Choose to dine, shop, or catch the latest movie in one of Fairfax's most popular places. There is not only one, but two Great American restaurants and a P.F Chang's, but a South Moon Under, R.E.I, and Peet's Coffee as well. Whether you're looking for a place to go on a date or spend some time for yourself, Fairfax Corner is about 15 minutes from campus and caters to all ages.
5. East Wind Vietnamese Restaurant
6. University Mall
If you go to Mason, you already know. All your daytime and nightlife needs are all in one place—whether you grabbing a cheap movie at the University Theatre or chowing down on some McNuggets after a late night out, this is the place to be. Oh, George's and Brione's Grill also offer a place to sit down with some friends and if you're Greek, Alpha ID has all things Srat to show off your chapter with. Also, there's a Dunkin' for all your coffee and doughnut needs. Whether you walk or drive, University Mall is an essential place for your college years at Mason.
7. Petland
Did you know playing with puppies is one of the best stress relievers? Probably. Petland is only about 10 minutes away from campus and has over 10 different breeds of dogs for you to openly play with, for free. Whether it's with a friend or a significant other, there is no doubt these puppies will bring a smile to your face. Plus, it's good for the dogs too, because they're in the cage all day and need you to play with them. So if you're filled with anxiety and stress, take a quick break and head to Petland to enjoy playing with and petting some sweet pups.
8. Duck Doughnuts
Do you love doughnuts? Do you love sweets? Do you love bacon? The answer should be yes to all of those things—and if it is, you have to go to Duck Doughnuts right now. These aren't like the stale Dunkin' Doughnuts you get on your way to class, these are hand-made, made-to-order doughnuts with 10 different coating options and five different topping choices that you get to choose from. Served hot and ready, these doughnuts are sure to make you break your diet and not regret a single second of doing so. Located next to Party City across from Paul IV—grab your friends who love food and go now.
9. Cava Mezze Grill
"It's kinda like Chipotle, but Greek food" - me, when I try to describe this gem of an eatery. Cava is probably one of the best new restaurants in Fairfax. You can choose to dine in or grab it on the go—either way, your taste buds will enjoy every second. Like Chipotle, you can choose between a rice bowl, salad, or pita bowl and top it with classic Mediterranean meats and toppings like hummus, tzatziki, cucumbers, feta, and much more yumminess. They also have house-made juices and foreign sodas to encompass the whole international food experience. Located on 123 before you hit Walmart, you will not regret trying this local gem.
10. Burke Lake Park
With the weather finally starting to warm up and formal and beach season around the corner, head on over to Burke Lake Park to hit the trails and get in some Vitamin D. Burke Lake has 10 different trails to explore down, whether you like to run, walk, bike, or observe. The shoreline is 4.7 miles around and perfect for getting in your fair share of exercise. You can head to their website to find trail maps and other details about their other amenities like their beach, camping sites, and rentals! It's only about 15 minutes down Ox road and a perfect way to get off campus and be outside! Can I get an Amen for spring?
11. Eagle Bank Arena
Don't be too salty about the name change, because this arena still has so many cool events to offer to you, especially if you're a George Mason student (yay for student discounts!). Upcoming events include the Harlem Globe Trotters, the Circus, and The Avette Brothers. You can also catch GMU sports teams playing here throughout the year to represent some Mason Pride, because we know they need it. Head to the Eagle Bank Arena website to purchase tickets and stay up to date with what's coming to town! It's right on George Mason's campus—double check online to also find information on parking.
